I like Anaïs for a girl, I think it's simple yet pretty. In my mind it's pronounced an-eye-ees, though I know it would be subject to mispronunciation.

For a boy, Alexis.

The only Alexis I've know is a girl. I don't think I'd imagine it as a boy's name although I know an Aleksi.

Anaïs is pretty but the pronunciation thing would annoy me. I would probably say it more like a - nay. Some people might say a-nay-is too.

JeanieJo · 27/03/2023 12:34

Yes I like them both, very French-sounding. Anouk is also nice and easier to pronounce.

WildAloofRebel · 27/03/2023 12:36

Love them both.

Lots of people will say Anay though. People pronounce the perfume Anay Anay 😵‍💫 they would NEVER pronounce naïve wrong so I don’t know where the logic is. My eldest has a name that is often misheard and it’s ok, you just have to teach them not to care and take themselves so seriously.

Love Alexis and contrary to PP, I considered it for a girl but the only ones I knew have been boys.

Fakeplastictrees55 · 27/03/2023 12:38

Thank you. I wanted names that worked in both French and Greek, but a bit limited perhaps. I like the pronunciation "Alex-e' but that probably wouldn't work in the UK .

Anaïs is lovely but open to mispronunciation and the trema is a bugger to type.

Alexis is too feminine

KirstenBlest · 27/03/2023 13:09

Anaïs is quite a mouthful, and she'll probably get called Ana or Annie.
The diaeresis will be omitted and the name will get said as Anay. There are nicer names.

Alexis is nice, and a boy's name, but the only Alexis know is a woman.

ourflagmeansdeath · 27/03/2023 19:34

I see Alexis as more of a unisex name than feminine and really love it on a boy but I do agree many people will think he's a girl as it seems to be more popular on girls now. Not keen on Anais at all, it'll get mispronounced too much and doesn't seem very nice to me.

WeeBitOfWoo · 27/03/2023 19:37

Both lovely.

Longdarkcloud · 27/03/2023 19:50

I agree that there might be future problems with Anais and I don’t know how to get the diareisis even.
I love Anouk if that appeals?
Annis is a very old English name.
Alexis was always a boy’s name until it was made popular in the TV series Dynasty. How about Alexei as that’s closer to the pronunciation you like. Or Axel or Alexandre.

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/03/2023 21:17

How about Alexei as that’s closer to the pronunciation you like?

I was going to suggest Alexei too. i don't thing you will get the pronunciation on both Alexis and Anais that you want in the UK.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/03/2023 21:48

I think Annis might be easier if you like it

Alexis is mostly a girls name here

Alexi would work

miniaturepixieonacid · 27/03/2023 22:38

I teach an Anais and she pronounces it Anna-ees. I like it. A lot of people call her Annie though.

I like Alexis but I'd think of it as a girl's name, really. Alexei is good.

user1492757084 · 28/03/2023 15:26

Anais is such a well known perfume that I think the name would be pronounced that way.

Do you like Annice, Agnes, Annest, Anastasia
