Damn. Do you have any suggestions of names that aren't wet or pretentious. I don't want my childs name to be wet or pretentious!

That's only based on someone's opinion though. You surely know the difference between opinions and facts. FactuallyThere are no dull wet pretentious names just as there are no beautiful names.
From your list of so called wet and pretentious names I love Neveah, but its very frowned upon on here.

barca123 · 25/03/2023 12:20

Like all of them on your first list - not remotely “wet” - mumsnet is weird!

SunhatsAndFlipFlops · 25/03/2023 12:42

I like Anna & Elodie from your lists. The rest from your first list, although timeless and classic, as others have said, I find abit boring/not very exciting.

YouSoundLovely · 25/03/2023 12:46

What does 'wet' (or 'pretentious', for that matter) even mean?

Of your original names, I like Emily and Anna a lot. Annie's OK. Alice and Emma are fine too but I don't like them quite as much.

I chose not to use overly popular names personally but I don't think there's anything wrong with them. They tend to be popular because they're nice.

YouSoundLovely · 25/03/2023 12:48

Like you, I like Lucy a lot. I also always liked Lucia, not so much Luciana.

Nothing wrong with Arabella really, I'm just not keen on it and as if will inevitably become Bella and I'm even less keen on that it wouldn't be a contender for me.

Elodie's OK. Quite popular at the mo.

Nevaeh, nope.

kezzieliza · 25/03/2023 12:50

I love Anna, Alice and Annie. I find Emily and Emma a bit boring, probably because I went to school with quite a few.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 12:51

Anna - classic if a bit dull - Annalise, Annis, Susannah, Marianne might be alternatives

Emma - classic and to me less dull. Ida, Stella, Flora, Esther, Honor, Oona might others

Alice - just overdone. Annis, Astrid or Imogen maybe?

Annie - only as a nn

Emily - ok but prefer Emma

Adela
Lydia
Verity
Lois
Frances
Louisa
Zoe
Claudia

Are others

All solid classic names. How can anyone think any of them as wet or pretentious? They’re the opposite of pretentious.

I like Anna a lot. Classic, simple, stylish, international.
Emma and Alice are next. Similar to above, but a little blah to me.
Emily -fine, but I don’t warm to it.
Annie -fine as a short form of Anna.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/03/2023 12:58

Farrah

ThatshallotBaby · 25/03/2023 13:03

I love Anna and Emma.
@Luredbyapomegranate has some gorgeous suggestions. Also thought of Clara abd Beatrice.

BookayIsOK · 25/03/2023 13:05

With Anna I would worry about people using the Frozen pronunciation for Ar-na
I like it better than Annie which I wouldn't want to give to a red haired child because of the musical.
I think Alice is your best name on the list.

Do you have a common or unusual surname? Emma and Emily would rate higher on my preferences if you had an unusual surname.

Calmondeck · 25/03/2023 13:15

The most intelligent, balanced, athletic, kick-arse woman I know is called Anna so I associate the name with all of these traits. She got Annie as a kid but as an adult is definitely an Anna.

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 13:19

Loathe and despise the name Emily.

The others are okay. Maybe a tad pedestrian.

RamblingEclectic · 25/03/2023 13:23

Nice classic names. I like Anna and Emma, and Annie as a nickname.

Some of the similar names that have been suggested like Annalise, Susannah, Flora, Louisa, Clara, and Beatrice I think also fit, along with Annora, Nina, Rena.

I dislike Alice and Emily, but entirely for very negative associations.

FayCarew · 25/03/2023 13:48

Loathe and despise the name Emily.
That's a bit strong for a popular and neutral name.

smileladiesplease · 25/03/2023 13:53

Both me snd dd on that list 😂😂

Never ever saw either name as pretentious how bloody funny

smileladiesplease · 25/03/2023 13:54

Luciana and arabella bloody awful

Marcipex · 25/03/2023 13:57

I know a lovely little Nevaeh. A really nice little girl, so I can’t dislike the name.

resm · 25/03/2023 20:52

I love Anna & Emma so much. Classic, timeless, suit all ages & personalities. Anna was top of my list, but didn’t have any girls.

fairycupcakes · 25/03/2023 21:01

Classic names. I find it baffling the amount of times I see names described as “wet” on here. What in the world does that even mean? 😂

OP of your list Anna & Emma are my favourites.

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 21:11

FayCarew · 25/03/2023 13:48

Loathe and despise the name Emily.
That's a bit strong for a popular and neutral name.

yeah, popular with other people. clearly not with me...

FayCarew · 25/03/2023 21:14

@fairycupcakes , it means a bit feeble.
I think names like Anna and Emma sound assertive, but Anya and Emily a bit more feeble.

FayCarew · 25/03/2023 21:22

@SecondhandMuck , popular with a lot of people. Having said that, I can't see any appeal in a lot of popular names, but there's a difference between disliking a name and 'loathing and despising' a name. It seems far to intense a feeling for a name like Emily. I might think a name is awful, bur more a 'WTF were the parents thinking?' than deep repugnance.

Viviennemary · 25/03/2023 21:26

Anna nice
Emma ok but not keen
Alice really like
Annie nice
Emily awful
