Sonny S could have been a character in a Just William-type book or a kids’ TV programme. I’m sorry OP, it does sound silly but as PPs have said you’ve got the nickname option.

There is a Sonny at my DC school, nobody has ever batted an eyelid at the name as far as I know and he’s a cute kid, suits him.

Sonny Stevens/Sturgess/Simkins/Saunders /whatever all sound pretty cool to me.

I am a sucker for alliteration names so I'd think I wouldn't mind it as long is it wasn't something too similar to Sonny in sound.

I think Sonny is a no go regardless of surname to be honest. It's a nickname. But yes, I think Sonny Smythe doesn't sound brilliant.

I like alliteration - wouldn’t put me off at all. The name Sonny is lovely too. I’m not sure why there are so many comments saying it wouldn’t suit a grown man… There are far more “out there” names floating around at the moment.
As long as your surname isn’t a noun I can’t see an issue. If you love it, go for it. Good luck x
