Hello. I named my daughter Ruby Mae 4 years ago, when this name was still quite unusual, However it is now No2 on 'the list'. I hate this fact!!!!! I want to aviod this with number 2 due in July. I fancy Oskar but fear this may go the same way (Eastenders!!).and nave no girl ideas at all. Any ideas for unusual but not wierd names!!

BIL's ex-wife was called Jonquil.

haggisaggis · 15/02/2008 14:32

We chose Scandinavian names for our 2 dcs since our surname has Scandinavian roots. Haven't come across anyone else in UK with ds's name. dd's name is slightly less unusual - but still uncommon.
I have a reasonably common name - but it was relatvely unusual when I was small. I always felt left out taht I couild never buy anything in a shop with my name on it! (used to see racks of key rings with "Susan" etc but nothing with my name!)

I met a baby Clemency today. Ithnk that's quite lovely and if I wasn't so old, I'd set about having another baby this minute so that I could use it!

I chose Max for number 3,feeling pretty confident as it was well down the list of popular names, but where we live it must be the most common boy's name around. I was in the playground one day last year and of 5 boys there, 4 of them were called Max. My worst nightmare.

laundrylover · 15/02/2008 16:17

You'll have to start addressing him as Maximillian (sp??)!

Anna8888 · 15/02/2008 16:23

seeker - Clémence has come from nowhere in 1980 to be 89th most popular girls name in France in 2005. Clémentine also has grown in popularity in same period - but not as much.

Samlet · 15/02/2008 17:31

When we used to live in a very trendy town on the South Coast, I once heard a child being called for in the park - Obi. As in Star Wars I thought but later saw the name Oberon on a hook at the nearby nursery. Shakespeare it may be, but I think calling your son after the king of the fairies is probably a bit too unusual.

If you want a really uncommon girls name now - Dorothy, both my grandmothers and never ever used.

seeker · 15/02/2008 18:32

I like Clemence (can't do accents!) - don't like Clementine much - but I do think Clemency is LOVELY!

tummytickler · 15/02/2008 19:39

my son was going to be Dorothy nn Dot if he was a girl - but he was a boy ! - maybe next time
agree Clemency is lovely

OrmIrian · 15/02/2008 20:31

I actually quite like Constance, and Connie for short. But as I'm never having any more I will never find out if it was good name for a girl or not.

bookwormmum · 15/02/2008 20:34

My dd is a Phoebe but I was wavering towards Caitlin or Alexandra for quite a long time. My favourite name prior to that was Rachel but for personal reasons, I didn't able to use that name. My ex dp wanted to call her Melanie and actually went around telling people that was her name . Funnily enough he wasn't so keen when I mooted Tobias for a boy. I think it's a great name.

bookwormmum · 15/02/2008 20:34

"feel able"... etc

Spidermama · 15/02/2008 20:38

I have to say I'm truly heartened to read such a positive thread with so many lovely, uncommon names. Usually the knives are out by this stage in the game on MN for anyone not called something traditional.

Samlet I live in a trendy town on the South Coast and I have heard tell of a boy with this name. It MUST be the same one surely.

Spidermama · 15/02/2008 20:40

There's an MNer, or former MNer, called Jonquil. (Real name not MN name obv.) I love it, especially shortened to Jon. Fab!

OrmIrian · 15/02/2008 20:41

I liked Idony for a girl - but fortunately for our marriage DS#2 was a boy. I still like it. And it isn't common in the least.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 15/02/2008 20:44

bookwormum you have named my dd;s first and middle name! thankyou!

bookwormmum · 15/02/2008 20:54

There's some wonderful names out there

LadyG · 15/02/2008 21:18

Sidonie?
Heloise? Always liked it not sure why.
Lia?
Thea?

there are lots of good websites but 1 quite fun one is www.nymbler.com you type in names you like and it gives you others based on sound/origin etc

FWIW I think it's nice to have not too unusual/unpronounceable being a 2nd generation immigrant and having had my name mispronounced for years...

GillN1976 · 15/02/2008 22:15

I really like the name Milla, I suggested in when I was pregnant but DH didn't like it. We had a boy anyway. I think it is eastern european.

chocolatespiders · 15/02/2008 22:17

Sanchia

Amaya

Clara

redpyjamas · 15/02/2008 22:33

Hanaflower - no my sis was never a Jones.

I am pleased to find that on the whole thread, no one has mentioned the name of my dd2.

And I agree that Dorothy is a lovely name. If I ever had another little girl (bit difficult as a single mum), she would be a Dorothy or Dorothea.

maisiemog · 16/02/2008 09:45

What about Sidney? For a boy or a girl. I used to quite like Dolores, but my Spanish colleague said it was awful and meant sadness. However, it was a nice option because diminutives can be Dolly, Dora or Lolo/a or Lores.
I really liked Dorcas for a girl, but I can't even begin to imagine where the other kids at school would go with that.

Control freaky again asked If I knew what Nemesis meant I do.Nemesis is the goddess of vengeance.
Nemesis was the goddess of divine indignation and retribution, who punished excessive pride, evil deeds, undeserved happiness or good fortune, and the absence of moderation. She was the personification of the resentment aroused in both gods and mortals by those who committed crimes with impunity, or who enjoyed undeserved luck.

We have a Clementine, named after Clementine Churchill and the character from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Bessie123 · 16/02/2008 14:07

There are some great suggestions here
