What do these names bring to mind? And how would you abbreviate them?

I've got a soft spot for Elijah because I know the most handsome Eli. Elijah is a bit stronger imo.

eggsbenaddict · 20/03/2023 14:19

Eli and Gabe.

Elijah - hippyish blonde surfboarder, Elijah Wood and very handsome local muscle man
Gabriel - angel, Halle Berrys model ex, Gabrielle

KirstenBlest · 20/03/2023 14:22

Neither. They are both too long, and a bit too OT for my taste. If you are needing to find a diminitive, look for shorter names.
I don't like Eli (eel-eye) and Gabriel will be Gay, Gabe or Gabby.

I think they have strong biblical associations and would assume the child came from a religious family.

Velvetbee · 20/03/2023 14:31

Gabriel. My eldest, a thoughtful, brave, exacting film maker. Endlessly curious about the world. We call him G, most people call him Gabe.
Elijah is also very cool

rwalker · 20/03/2023 14:33

Can’t stand either but love gabe and Eli

MyGrandmaLizzie · 20/03/2023 15:09

Neither. Gabriel will. Get called Gay, Gabe or Gabby. Elijah is awful in my opinion. I assume you're religious.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 20/03/2023 16:44

Gabriel. Love that name.

ourflagmeansdeath · 20/03/2023 16:50

Gabriel brings the image of the angel and Elijah brings the image of the character from The Vampire Diaries 😁

I'd probably shorten the two to Gabe and Eli, most obvious ones.

And out of the two, I prefer Gabriel.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/03/2023 16:53

Yes. The Biblical references are the things that come most to mind for me, particularly for Elijah.

I do know someone whose middle name is Gabriel (named after Rossetti).

WordtoYoMumma · 20/03/2023 17:02

I have an Elijah so that would be my preference. His middle name is Thomas which we didn't think through so his mates call him ET 😂 thankfully he likes this!!

PurpleAirGuitar · 20/03/2023 17:14

I love Gabriel, I picture someone quite cool and interesting. I've only ever heard Gabe as a short form in the UK although I've heard they use Gay in Ireland.

Elijah sounds much more nonconformist-church-ish to me. I guess I'd use Eli as a short form.

Yankeedoodlemandy · 20/03/2023 17:22

only ever met one child with each name and both very naughty. Has coloured my view ! Gave or Eli . Gabe wins slightly. If going Old Testament would prefer Isaac . The Noah I know is also very naughty!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/03/2023 18:33

Gabriel (Gabe).

Mammyloveswine · 20/03/2023 18:36

I had both of these of my shortlist..went with Elijah but he always gets Eli. I love his name!

Lots of Eli's where I live though!

PoorMrsNorris · 20/03/2023 18:38

I absolutely love both.
But honestly don't know which I'd chose. For some reason I see Gabriel with dark hair and Elijah as blonde!

Ha my Elijah is a blondie! Looks like an actual angel (behaves like the devil though...)

Mammyloveswine · 20/03/2023 18:43

Op other names in the same vein I like are
Zachary (Zach)
Daniel (but not shortened!)
Isaac
Ezekiel (Zeke)
Ezra
Jude
Samuel
Nathaniel (Nate)
Sebastian (Seb)
Asher (Ash)
Noah
Jonah

Frenchyq25 · 20/03/2023 18:44

My youngest is a Gabrial (Gaelic spelling). Most people call him Gabe these days.

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 20/03/2023 18:50

I have an Elijah and we love his name. There aren't many of them and it's a great strong name.

cheercaptain · 20/03/2023 19:01

Elijah

justmyluck1234 · 20/03/2023 19:13

I prefer Elijah out of the two

RandomUsernameHere · 20/03/2023 19:32

I love Gabriel, it's one of my favourite names. I wouldn't shorten it. Not at all keen on Elijah.

Greentopk · 20/03/2023 19:43

I have an Elijah! It’s my absolute favourite name (along with my other sons names). I think it’s strong, handsome, and Eli is such a cool nickname. He goes by a mixture of both. He loves his name and it suits him - he is very blonde and looks a bit like a surfer dude - weird as matches pp’s description!
Saying that though I also love Gabriel, I think it’s a very handsome name. It would have been up there on my list for one of my other ds’s but I just really dislike the nickname Gabe.

TinaTotal · 20/03/2023 19:53

I have a Gabriel. He is G, G-Dog, Gabe, Gabs, Gabey. At nursery he's Gabriel or Gabe. We are not religious.
