Hello

My partner is Turkish and I am Welsh, I am currently pregnant with our daughter, my partner desperately wants her to have a Turkish name - he has suggested ‘Dilara’ - the meaning is pretty but will inevitably be shortened to ‘Lara’ over here…

What does everyone think?

Shortened by whom? If that happens, repeat her name each, and every time. They will soon get the message.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 13/03/2023 09:32

I think that's a beautiful name and I'd have happily gone with it for my daughter in your circumstances.
Although I'd have probably shortened it to Dil and then ended up nicknaming her Pickle but our family is a bit odd like that.

Lizzie67384 · 13/03/2023 09:34

Okay I’m stealing that nickname!! Super cute

Give your daughter your surname.

SallyWD · 13/03/2023 10:28

I think Dilara is lovely and I also love Lara. I don't know any other Turkish female names (I only seem to know Turkish men!). Are there any other names you like? I'll have a Google.

SallyWD · 13/03/2023 10:30

I love Aisha and Moray. Also Emine.

Perfect.

evemillbank · 13/03/2023 11:21

I used to work with a Dil and I think she was called Dilara or very similar. I like it

Lifeisnotabedofroses · 13/03/2023 11:30

Melisa is another one. We picked that it had 2 boys. Male names much harder!!

Luana1 · 13/03/2023 11:34

I love the name Ayla, which means moonlight I believe.

user1492757084 · 13/03/2023 11:38

Dilara is sweet.
I love Dilly and Dil and Dilara

WhisperingAutistic · 13/03/2023 11:38

I think it's nice

Amdone123 · 13/03/2023 11:41

Dilara is lovely, as is Ayla and Alara.
Beautiful names.
We have an Esra.

user1492757084 · 13/03/2023 11:42

Dilara Manon - Manon is a daffodil - flower of wales.

hairyleary · 13/03/2023 11:49

Dilara is nice but a lot of people go by Lara and shortened it so now they just name them Lara instead. I like the names Mina, Ayla, Mira, Ayda, Serra, Leyla, Alya, Arya, Ela and Naz. Girl names are lovely in Turkish and easier to pronounce in the UK than boy names.

Roundthebend45 · 13/03/2023 11:55

Seren is both a Welsh and Turkish girls name so would work.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 11:57

The daffodil is Narcissus 'Manon Lescault', named after a french opera.

mumonherphone · 13/03/2023 12:06

I like it and would call her Dilly

I was also going to suggest this!

But I think Dilara is a truly beautiful name too, and I love Dilly as a nickname.

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/03/2023 12:22

I think Dilara is lovely!

doorwo · 14/03/2023 12:32

I worked with a little girl whose family were Turkish and she was called Elfida- I thought that was so cute

Elspethelf · 15/03/2023 13:21

The Turkish name Esra was high on my list. We had a boy :)

Dilara is a sweet name, I prefer Dil as a nn.
