Edie pronunciation?

Love Edie for a little girl, but concerned people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce Edie?

It's one of those names the more you say it / look at it / mull over the possibly pronunciations the more confusing it becomes.

Call her Edith and use Edie as her nickname. People seem to find Edith easier than Edie.

There's no confusion with the name Evie, is there, so why is there with Edie?

They are two different names, Edie and Eddie which apart from having some things in common letters, the ee sound are not the same. One thing that surprises me on this thread is Eadie which would confuse people how to pronounce it; it looks stupid and made up.

@peaceinourtime , I agree. I pp that maybe it was Ea like in Eamonn. If I heard it I'd spell it like in Edie Sedgewick.

Maybe because there's no name that's Evvie?

I'm aunt to an Edie and can confirm that the Eddie thing is a real and constant frustration to her, both written and spoken.

There are some places where Evie is commonly pronounced as ev-vie (as in Evelyn and evangeline) - I've heard this pronunciation a lot in America and Ireland.

@WelshWondergirl , Evi (Evvy) is a normal european name - like Evie in the UK. I think most forms of Eve start with an Ev sound not Eev.

I can appreciate that she might get called Eddie IRL, and that's why these threads are of value.

It's annoying when you get the stock 'My name is Phoebe and no one has ever called me Feebs/spelled my name Pheobe' replies. It happens.

It makes no sense to call Edie 'Eddy' but lots of posters are 'fumming', looking for a new dinning table/filling cabinet, have jumpers that are piling etc. I know I sometimes tap a key twice by accident.

Honestly if you like it go for it. I have an extremely boring, plain, common, traditional name and still get mispronouncing or spelling it strangely. Edie is a lovely name, one in my DS’s class and all of the children are able to pronounce it correctly.

We have an Edie in the extended family and she too gets called Ed or Eddie often.

It's probably because Edit, Edinburgh or just Ed are so popular as names/words.
