Love Edie for a little girl, but concerned people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce Edie?

Anyone who understands how English spelling works is unlikely to say Eddie.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 08:32

@CharitySchmarity , I'd guess a lot of people will say Eddie then.

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 13/03/2023 08:45

I'd probably read that as Eddie.
Could it be spelled Eadie?

dramalamma · 13/03/2023 08:57

I have one - she only gets Eddie on what's app autocorrect! I've never had anyone muddle for Eddie. Occasional misheard for Evie but not very often.

LightHousePanda · 13/03/2023 09:08

I think it depends on where you live as Edith isn't popular where I am as far as I'm aware. Never met or heard about a single one young or old so in that situation I can see how some would say Eddie. Also given more popular names like Evie I can also see when speaking people mishearing it. The best way to know this is by asking people who are Ediths or have children called that. I think people on this forum tend to be better educated in names and spelling than the average person.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 09:15

@LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble , I'd read Eadie as Adey

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:07

I'd read it as Ed-ie

Like Edit, Edinburgh, Edward etc

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:08

Eadie would be Eed-ie

Edie to me is Ed-ie

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 14:32

@Reddahlias , do you say edict as ed-ict, Edith as Ed-ith and Eden as Ed-en?

Bearpawk · 13/03/2023 14:37

Surely nobody who can read would think it's eddy

MissingMoominMamma · 13/03/2023 14:38

I know two. I don’t think they’ve ever been mistaken for Eddies!!

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 14:42

You'd be surprised, @@Bearpawk I know someone who reads Louis as Louise, and writes 'to Louis' in Louise's christmas card.

We have at least one poster on this thread who says Edie is pronounced Eddie.

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:42

There is no logical rule that Ed becomes Ee by adding -ie to me knowledge, or is there? I'm curious.

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:51

I'd read Eadie as Adey

Ad-ey? Wow. I'd say Ead-ee

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 13/03/2023 15:03

Eadie is a surname.

Most native English speakers will know that Edie is pronounced ee-dee. It's not a big deal.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 13/03/2023 16:15

Pronunciation threads have become very weird recently, with at least one resident disruptor (I suspect under a couple of aliases) insistent on their pronunciations and refusing to listen to careful explanations.

I don't anticipate you will have a problem with people calling Edie, Eddie, OP.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 19:50

I wouldn't have known that Eadie was a surname. I'd have thought maybe Eadie was Ay not Ee because of names like Eamonn.
I don't think you'd have much trouble with Edie either but not everyone will get it right. Just like a lot of names.

HPsauce01 · 14/03/2023 20:25

My daughter is called Edie - the only time she gets called Eddie is when they call her name at the doctors!!

derbylass81 · 14/03/2023 20:54

I'd never heard this name until about 12-18months ago....now it seems to be everywhere.

Well, Edie Sedgwick, I'd heard of her, but that's it. Hadn't given much thought to the name.

People round here don't mistake it for Eddie (that I know of) but they do mistake it for Evie a lot, or query how to spell it, or ask what it's short for.

SpringIntoChaos · 14/03/2023 21:01

I have an Eadie in my class (with the Ea spelling). Always pronounced 'ee-di' (long ee short di)

Beautiful name 😍

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 21:37

I much prefer the Eadie spelling - and I'd know how to pronounce it.

ReadersD1gest · 12/03/2023 23:10

I really don't think people will confuse it with Eddie...

Oh but they do, all the time. I have an Edie and she hates her name because of the idiots people mispronouncing her name

Oh, sorry. I'm genuinely surprised at this.

Another parent of an Edie here (now 20) and yes, it's Eddie (written and / or pronounced) with mind-numbing frequency. Mainly from under 50s who've never come across the name.
