Can anyone think of a 6 letter boys name, that can be shortened, and works well in English as well as Dutch.
Harmen was suggested, but shortened to Harm doesn't work for me in English!
Any ideas?

Harmen is horribly old-fashioned!!

My DD has a Julian in her class, would that work?

FrogsHiccups · 11/03/2023 07:13

My husband’s grandfather was Dutch. His name was Antony, but was known as Tony. Could also be shortened to Ant?

Gingerwarthog · 11/03/2023 07:16

Jacob

Does it need exactly six letters or just two syllables? My son is Johan (but obvs has the old fashioned Dutch name is Johannes). Can be shortened to Jan or Hans.

itssquidstella · 11/03/2023 07:20

I know a Hannes who's just Hannes. Antony is nice too, as is Henrik. What about Pieter?

TheVanguardSix · 11/03/2023 07:21

Although Joachim is biblical, DD’s dear friend is Dutch and called Joachim. Joe/Jojo for short.
Peter/Piet?

Some nice Ideas there, thanks.
Ideally 6 letters, with a short version...but all options considered really 😁

Why does it need to be 6 letters? I don't understand these types of rules people impose when naming a child.

Akite · 11/03/2023 07:43

Hans
Jasper
Willem
Jaco
Lukas
Pieter
Matthijs
Ruben

I worked for a Dutch company for a while, these were all popular names amongst my colleagues and work well in English or Dutch.

Okay, I'll be straight with you all....the baby is my nephew, and is due in 8 weeks. Parents haven't shared their chosen name, but hinted, as per the 6 letters, will be using a shorter version and works nicely in English and Dutch!
So my boyfriend and I are having a silly game to come up with guesses, to see if either of us get it right!
I guessed right that baby was going to be ( another) boy for them🤣

I'm liking Willem so far...I think that's a good contender

BTW, when they announce the name, be polite, kind and supporting. You don't need to like the name, they need to like the name, OK.
Also, this thread is lame. What if they're not choosing Dutch name, but international one?

MotherOfHouseplants · 11/03/2023 09:10

I’d be genuinely surprised if a Dutch parent used Willem. It’s pretty old-fashioned and was last popular in the 80s so it’s a real ‘dad’ name there.

sparkysalmon · 11/03/2023 11:35

@goldenfoliage

Both parents are Dutch, and live in the Netherlands, as do all of their Dutch extended family. They have teased that it is a typical but possibly slightly old fashioned Dutch name, but that it will also work nicely in English ( and therefore I can pronounce 🤣)

It's just a bit of fun, wondering what the name will be. I'm excited about it, that's all.

And, absolutely I will be enthusiastic whatever the name will be, and as I will be this child's childminder when his mum returns to work, as I am already for his brother it's just a bit of fun.

If it's "Lame" for you, feel free not to participate

I don’t know if willem works in English and Dutch as the first letter wouldn’t be pronounced the same in both

GrumpyPanda · 11/03/2023 11:48

Marten.

When I lived there, all the really derpy kids were called Kevin. (They pronounced it KEFF - Fin)
