What are your thoughts on these boy names

Hamish
Rowan
Lachlan
Iver
Rufus
Benjamin occasionally shortened to Benji'
Jeremiah 'maybe occasionally shortened to Jem'

I also love Tobias but dislike Toby so thinking it's a no go?

Toying with Rupert and Raphael too just not sure they are very 'me'

Most are too try-hard, Benjamin is nice, but you can't control the nick name for long.

ourflagmeansdeath · 10/03/2023 19:06

Hamish - I always think of John Hamish Watson and he hated his middle name
Rowan - Really love this!! It's lovely
Lachlan - Not for me
Iver - Sounds like River
Rufus - Not for me
Benjamin - Love especially as Benji
Jeremiah - I love love Jem, but only as a nickname for James. Not keen on the name Jeremiah :(

Tobias - I think you can use it without Toby. In the Divergent book series, a character is addressed as Tobias without ever being shortened to Toby. But to be fair, can you really imagine a 5 year old called Tobias?? Perhaps not the best choice.

Rupert and Raphael are both no's for me, dislike them very much.

Twoinapod · 10/03/2023 19:06

I like Benjamin, Hamish is lovely if you’re Scottish. The others I don’t like.

Snoopystick · 10/03/2023 19:07

Love Rowan and Raphael

2chocolateoranges · 10/03/2023 19:09

Hawkish and Lachlan for me.

2chocolateoranges · 10/03/2023 19:09

Hamish that should say!

NoraVanDoogle · 10/03/2023 19:18

Hamish - knew a westie called hamish

Rowan - Love

Lachlan - Not keen

Iver - No

Rufus - Sounds like a dog name

Benjamin occasionally shortened to Benji'
Jeremiah 'maybe occasionally shortened to Jem' - not keen on either

I also love Tobias but dislike Toby so thinking it's a no go? - Again no

Toying with Rupert and Raphael too just not sure they are very 'me' - Love Raphael but only for Rafa nickname.

Luana1 · 10/03/2023 19:29

I love Rowan and Rufus from your list. Is Iver a misspelling of Ivor? How about Ivo?

KirstenBlest · 10/03/2023 20:24

Hamish - like but would assume some scottish blood
Rowan - like but R names like Roman too popular
Lachlan - like but would assume some scottish blood, not everyone will say the 'ch'
Iver - better than being called Slough
Rufus - not keen
Benjamin occasionally shortened to Benji' - Ben is ok
Jeremiah 'maybe occasionally shortened to Jem - negative connotation and a bit long. Not keen on Jez but Jem is ok

Tobias will be called Toby
Rupert and Raphael - Rupert too bear/Jilly Cooper. Really don't like Raphael/Raf/Raffy/Rafa

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/03/2023 20:31

Hamish - my favourite

Rowan - nice but v overused (along with Roman)

Lachlan - nice

Iver - you mean Ivor?? Bit twee but nice enough

Rufus - great / quite popular

Benjamin occasionally shortened to Benji'

  • it will be shortened to Ben, if you don’t like that don’t use it

Jeremiah 'maybe occasionally shortened to Jem' - it will be shortened to something - so you’d need to impose Jem or might well end up Jez or Jerry. Jerome is nice and would probably actually get used

I also love Tobias but dislike Toby so thinking it's a no go? - yep

Toying with Rupert and Raphael too just not sure they are very 'me' - Rupert just makes me think of posh boys. Raphael is nice - it will be shortened to Raff though, it’s quite popular

Emmamoo89 · 10/03/2023 20:52

Lachlan

Penguinsaregreat · 10/03/2023 20:55

I like Iver and Rufus.
Not keen on the others.

Raggeo · 10/03/2023 20:56

I like Hamish, Rowan, Lachlan, Benjamin and Raphael from your list👍

Mumofgirls2017 · 10/03/2023 23:04

I like Rowan and Rufus

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/03/2023 23:05

Love all except Jeremiah,

mintich · 10/03/2023 23:13

Lachlan amd Hamish for me!

Anskl · 10/03/2023 23:53

Hamish - ok if you're Scottish
Rowan - gorgeous name, but too synonymous with Rowan Atkinson?
Lachlan - surely you HAVE to be Scottish, right?
Iver - makes me think of the band Bon Iver, which isn't necessarily a bad thing
Rufus - perfect name for a dog
Benjamin - great name, but overused?
Jeremiah - too biblical for my tastes

user1492757084 · 13/03/2023 13:42

All fine names.
I would not use Jeremiah as it is too fussy for me.
