myself and partner are due our first baby in September, we’ve got a girls name sorted but struggling on boys.
My last name is Harper and the baby will be taking its fathers surname - what’s your thoughts on Harper as a boys name?

It’s generally used as a girl’s name now, though -would that bother you? Or him?

SummaLuvin · 06/03/2023 17:28

I automatically think of a girl with that name, but it isn't overtly feminine sounding to me. The England and Wales 2021 stats show that 1480 girls were named Harper and only 32 boys - so most people will also assume a girl based on the name.

I’d also say girls name, could you have something similar like Harry or Harvey

ididntwanttodoit · 06/03/2023 19:22

Harper sounds very transferable to me - works for both and all sexes.

Give the baby your surname. Harper.

I know a few boys called Harper suits them. Oldest is 14 youngest 3

I think it’s OK as a boy’s name.

Harper is actually quite nice for a boy, it's defo going to be more thought of as a girl's name so you'd have to specify the gender. But it's really no different than having James for a girl, like Blake Lively's daughter.

Hankthehonk · 06/03/2023 22:53

I think this is a very cool idea to give him your name, and Harper works great as a unisex name

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 23:31

Harper is Great for a boy.

I really don't like it for a girl.

Harper is used for a well known girl.
Before that it was usually for a boy.

Harper is nice for a boy.
You could make his nick name Harpo - like Harpo Marx.
Or give your children two second names, one being Harper.

Harper Beckham is really not that well known! And why should she be, other than her famous parents?

You knew who they meant straight away, so she must be pretty well known 😂
