Mily
Baby girl, mother French, father English. do you reckon it's a strange spelling of Milly/Millie or is it a French name?
Haven't spoken to them yet, have only seen baby's name on emails.

I don;t think it's French, and I do think it would be pronounced Meely

French pronunciation doesn;t do the "my" sound much

E.g. we would probably pronounce "Milo" as "Mylo" but in France it would be "Meelo".

tassisssss · 10/02/2008 19:49

I'd assume it was Milly with one L, to rhyme with Lily.

FrayedKnot · 10/02/2008 19:50

Am not French btw so may stand corrected by someone more qualified

Vacua · 10/02/2008 19:59

Mee-ly - it sounds sort of russian doesn't it?

Vacua · 10/02/2008 20:00

could it be short for something else?

alfiesbabe · 10/02/2008 20:20

Could it be a typo?

Anna8888 · 10/02/2008 20:31

It's a very, very rare first name in French -only given 12 times in France since 1950.

Mee-ly.

Vacua · 10/02/2008 20:35

I have remembered! mily barakirev, the composer, probably born when french was spoken in russia

so that is what made me think it was russian

deaconblue · 11/02/2008 12:26

ah I wondered if it was a typo but she's spelled it the same way several times since the original email. So Milly but with an "ee" sound rather than an "i" sound. goes nicely with their older dd Mia, I think

Here in the States, it'd be pronounced May-Leigh. Hope this helps Smile

Onestepup · 08/07/2020 08:58

I'd assume it was pronounced MY-lee.

Maduixa · 08/07/2020 11:44

I'd have to ask. In a purely French context, I would assume MEE-lee, but in English, probably MY-lee.

bridgetreilly · 08/07/2020 11:45

I'd assume it was meant to be Miley.

emmathedilemma · 08/07/2020 12:33

www.howtopronounce.com/mily
as in Miley according to this

Grufallosfriends · 08/07/2020 13:03

In French Mee lee

In English Mill ee.

Grufallosfriends · 08/07/2020 13:05

I'd assume it was meant to be Miley.

That would be Mil ee or My lee?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/07/2020 19:48

goes nicely with their older dd Mia, I think

If it’s mee-lee then they are letting themselves in for years of misheard shouts across the playground and up the stairs with that sibling pair.

How?!
daisypond · 08/07/2020 20:23

I’d assume Mee-lee.

bluemoon2468 · 08/07/2020 21:29

@ZoyaTheDestroyer haha I was thinking this. How on earth could Mily be pronunced May-lee? 😆

foxtiger · 08/07/2020 22:26

In a French accent I think it would be mee-lee with a slight emphasis on the "lee."

TigerQuoll · 10/07/2020 06:22

I would pronounce it Milee with the i sounding like eye.

Looks like Miley (the singer) but dropping the e.

mathanxiety · 10/07/2020 07:47

Nah.
Mily would most likely be pronounced Miley as in Miley Cyrus.

BeMorePacific · 10/07/2020 07:55

I’d just ask them!
But I’d say it’s the same way as Miley Cyrus too x

Grufallosfriends · 10/07/2020 09:33

In French and German it would definitely be Mill-ee.

In English it could be anything Grin
