Does Ace as a nickname for Alastair work?

Really like the name Alastair, not keen on Al or Aly. A friend has suggested Ace, does that work or is it too random? Thank you

I think it’s a bit weird sorry!

Pixilicious1 · 02/03/2023 21:53

No it doesn’t

fruitbrewhaha · 02/03/2023 21:53

It’s a bit wanky. Or a cartoon character.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 02/03/2023 21:54

I think Ace is a bit random as a name anyway, but it seems to have become noticeably more popular in the last few years, so if someone told me it was short for Alistair I wouldn't think it was any weirder tbh.

weebarra · 02/03/2023 21:55

I'll ask mine - nope, he thinks not. We call him Al or Ali usually. I've heard the nickname Dair?

pictoosh · 02/03/2023 21:56

No.

NowtSalamander · 02/03/2023 21:57

It is widely used amongst teens I teach to mean they are asexual. If that helps your decision! Of course they may move on from this any minute now….

Regularsizedrudy · 02/03/2023 21:57

No

Pinkbananas01 · 02/03/2023 21:59

Al, Ali or Dair would be usual shorts for Alistair.

HandlesFruit · 02/03/2023 22:00

Ace is a term people use for asexual so might not be great as a name.

Came on to say this.

'Ace' is usually asexual. You can buy 'ace rings' and everything.

RaraRachael · 02/03/2023 22:01

No - Ace has nothing to do with Alistair. It's a dog's name.
Normal shortenings are Al or Ali but you've said you don't like those. What's the obsession with nicknames on here - just call him his proper name 🙄

toastofthetown · 02/03/2023 22:02

It doesn’t really work. And he might well decide he prefers Al or Ally anyway, even if you did use Ace when he was very young.

NoSuchThingAsMe · 02/03/2023 22:02

Well you could, but it's no more a shortening for Alastair than it is for Rupert.

Solasum · 02/03/2023 22:04

Alex or Alec could be used. Or Les, I believe old fashioned names are now in fashion…

EwwSprouts · 02/03/2023 22:04

No and you could be setting him for a life of having the mickey taken. Ace lol you can't even hit the back of the net!

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 02/03/2023 22:06

No.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 02/03/2023 22:07

Asexualism aside, it's way too try-hard

PermanentTemporary · 02/03/2023 22:09

Als?

I think if you hate all the shortenings that people are going to use, rethink the name.

CaramelMach · 02/03/2023 22:13

It's rare I'd be so blunt but....

ITS FUCKING AWFUL

user1492757084 · 03/03/2023 03:03

Al or Alistair is the usual.
I have known most Alistairs to be called their full name.

Another option is to make a nick name out of their initials or their surname. ie
Alistair Barry - A Bee or Abe
Alistair Charles McPherson - A Mack or A Cee
Alistair James - A Jay
Alistair Xavier Edwards - Axe
Alistair George Wesome - Awesome

So write the whole name and play about with some nice options by giving the kid a suitable second name.

Twoinapod · 03/03/2023 04:33

I think Dair is nice. The one I know ended up being Dare as people just heard that name so were spelling it like that. I always thought it was a cool nickname

Reddahlias · 03/03/2023 08:25

No way is Ace related to or sound like Alastair.

The natural shortening is Al or Allie. You don't need a nickname though!

Reddahlias · 03/03/2023 08:26

This!

Seconded. Just call him a name you actually want to call him.
