I want to find the perfect name. We had a lovely family member we would like to honour his name was Francis.

Our list so far is;
Francis
Franklin (unsure on this one is it too modern/surnamey)
Bobby (has this been done too much)
Harold (I’d go Hal as a nn not Harry)

Francis -I like
Franklin - I prefer
Bobby -definitely over-used and a bit boring.
Harold - no, really hate it.

SallyWD · 24/02/2023 15:03

I like Frances and Harold (nn Harry). I'd only like Bobby as a nickname for Robert - definitely not the name on the birth certificate!

Whichnametopick · 24/02/2023 15:17

@SallyWD that’s my worry with Francis. Will people assume he is female?

I don't think so. I know Frances is the female version. I wouldn't think Francis is female

Francis - Lovely name, don't think people would say he's female, it's a nice name. Frances is female.
Franklin - Always associated with the American president. Also I have a strange dislike of names ending in "Lin."
Bobby - Quite like as a nickname for Robert
Harold - Not for me unfortunately. Although Hal is a nice nickname.

wishing3 · 24/02/2023 20:04

I like Francis, and Hal.

Twoinapod · 24/02/2023 20:29

I’m not a fan of Francis, it sounds feminine to me (I’m aware the feminine version is spelled differently)
Franklin is a bit better
Not a fan of Bobby and Harold

FayCarew · 24/02/2023 20:34

Francis - you could use it as a middle name, definitely a boy's name.
Franklin- too american
Bobby - yes if short for Robert
Harold - not keen

It depends on the surname.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/02/2023 21:10

Harold with Hal as a nickname was on our list for our son :) That's my fav of yours. Francis is nice too.

PurpleReindeer2 · 24/02/2023 21:13

Robert Franklin sounds OK. You could nn Bobby.

drpet49 · 24/02/2023 21:31

Franklin

Barleysugar86 · 24/02/2023 21:35

I love Bobby and Franklin.

I know a young female Frances. It is pronounced the same. Francis reads quite religious/ Catholic to me so I don't think I'd use it unless I was myself.

OctaviaOwl · 24/02/2023 21:39

I don't like Francis. It's a bit wet

Bobby is the nicest

RuthW · 24/02/2023 22:17

Harold Francis gets my vote or Francis Harold.

DipperandMabel · 24/02/2023 22:26

Francis - Not to my taste but a proper name and decent - he will likely be Frank or Frankie if that bothers you.
Franklin - too American president-y
Bobby - meh, it’s ok but is it a nickname for Robert or just Bobby - I think Boaby the barman tbh
Harold - Harold Bishop comes to mind instantly, is that a bad thing? No not necessarily but I do think old man, not a cool old man either

Francis gets my vote.

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/02/2023 01:10

I like Francis (love Frank) and Harold

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2023 15:39

I like Francis, but it’s getting quite popular

If you like Harold nn Hal I’d go for that - time for a revival

Bobby is cute but needs to be short for Robert

Franklin is Ok, again getting quite popular
