Flora - experiences?

Hi all,

DH and I love the name Flora (it has a family connection as well) but well aware that lots of people associate it with margarine. That doesn't really put us off, as we still think it's lovely, but I was wondering whether anyone who is actually called Flora, or who has a DD called Flora, had experience of the whole "spreads easily" jibe that is often raised on here.

I would have thought that given that slogan hasn't been used in a long time, any kids/teens these days would be unlikely to tease on that basis, but maybe I'm being naive? I'm in my late 30s and honestly don't even remember that being the slogan.

DC’s close friend is a Flora. As far as I know they’ve not had any negative comments yet (primarily age). I think it’s a lovely name. Wasn’t aware of that slogan- I’m in my 30s.

I know loads of little Floras. That and Florence are very popular round here.

Sorry that horrible cleaning chemical "Zoflora" has ruined it for me. How about Florence instead?

crumpet · 21/02/2023 14:23

Know a Flora in her early twenties. Never been an issue

MrsRosieBrew · 21/02/2023 14:24

I love that name. That and Fleur.

I was veto'd but it was my first choice. I have a family member called Flora and I think it's utterly beautiful.

JenniferAudrey · 21/02/2023 17:30

I have a Flora Beatrice. :)

I love the name, but in my country (and most of continental Europe) it would be associated with margarine and flora/fauna.

I don't think the connection is as strong here in the UK though.

Flora is sweet and I like the plant connection.
Fleur I prefer- juast a bit more confident.

I'm from Scotland so I wouldn't associate the name with the margarine. It's a really common girls name in Scotland. I live away now, but I know a little Flora, it's a lovely name!

@ireneadler101

I actually eat flora but honestly until you pointed it out I didn't associate it with butter just that it was a lovely floral name x

One of my DNs is Flora and to my knowledge has never been teased about it or anything. I think it's a lovely name.
