Jessica or Emily

Our DD is a few weeks old and we just can't decide between Jessica and Emily.
I love both names and like the nn potential with each of them.
Worried that Jessica might be seen as a bit dated but that Emily is 'too popular' and there will be several Emilies in every playgroup.
Wondering what other people think.
Thank you!!!

Jessica

To me Emily is a total bore whereas Jessica is a hoot. Can't you tell what my name is 🤣

fruitandfibreg · 21/02/2023 15:00

I love Jessica. Emily is really popular in the baby/toddler classes atm but no Jessica's anywhere. It's so pretty

this is so interesting to me, as I feel they are both dated to the same group, 80's-90's babies, the generation actually having the babies! The stats on Dark Greener support the steady decline in trend - however popularity of similar Emilia, Amelia, Emmeline... all probably add into the feel of Emily being more current.

Something to consider with Emily is how it is said in your region. My region has a relaxed, lazy style which means Emily is pronounced EMM-LEE or even EMM-LEH, the sound of the 'I' completely dropped. I know an Emily who finds this infuriating.

Mamoun · 21/02/2023 15:30

I don't think these two names are popukar these days. They were in the 90's.
I like both but maybe Jessica a bit more.

RuthW · 21/02/2023 16:16

I really dislike Jessica so I'd say Emily, but Emma or Emmaline are much nicer

mathanxiety · 21/02/2023 16:24

Jessica.

Emily always strikes me as a bit prim.

Jomummy1013 · 21/02/2023 16:30

I have three children, two of them daughters and Jessica and Emily are their names. So I like your choices 😂Emily has lots of other Emilys at school with her (she is 7) and Jessica less so, she hasn't known many, even though the name was in the top 10 the year she was born (2010). Their names do get shortened down. I call Jessica, Jessica, but to everyone else she's Jess. Emily is an Ems.

Both are ok but I'm not personally overfond of eirpther but I think I prefer Jessica. Emily is a bit twee.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/02/2023 20:12

Jessica

Too many Emily type names about.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/02/2023 20:27

I'd love to show this thread to my DD, who is a Jessica.
She moans about her name, but that's mostly due to the popularity of it when she was born (she's late teens now) as there were 4 in her class and 6 in her year.

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2023 01:20

Jessica by far. It's Shakespearean, fabulous and feisty.

Emily is pure meh. So bland. Emma would

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2023 01:21

....oops, posted too soon... Emma would be much better is what I was trying to finish saying.

Snooozername · 24/02/2023 02:30

How about Jessamy?!

whytesnow · 24/02/2023 02:45

Jessica

PurpleParrots · 24/02/2023 02:55

I like both names. At a push I think I prefer Emily (only because the last time I heard someone calling their DD Emily was 20 years ago). Jessica is quite common around here.

Theoldwoman · 24/02/2023 03:41

Emily, love ‘Em too.

Not a fan of Jess, Jessie, Messy Jessie etc.

nowtherearethree · 24/02/2023 03:59

I have a Jessica Emily she is feisty kind and thoughtful. Her name really suits her x

cassiatwenty · 24/02/2023 04:07

Emily

garlictwist · 24/02/2023 04:25

Oh thank God. Someone suggesting normal names for once Grin

I like them both and know lovely people with these names but I think Jessica has more options for abbbrevations if that's something that matters.
