My little boy is known as Teddy or Ted and has Edward on his birth certificate

fyn · 14/02/2023 12:06

I know a Teddy in his 20s, never uses Ted though!

Itsagrandoldteam · 14/02/2023 12:10

I grew up knowing 2 Edwards, one was Edward all the time, the other was Teddy at primary school, Ted at high school and I noticed when he went to university he became Ed.
You can call him what you want but I would give him the name Edward and he has the option to become Ed or Edward as he gets older.

Actionstations · 14/02/2023 12:11

I know a 7 year old called Teddy and am not comfortable referring to him by name. It's a baby's name or a dog's name. I'd go with Edward or Ted so he doesn't have to tell people his name is Teddy when he is an adult.

Fourecks · 14/02/2023 12:17

Teddy bears were named after Teddy Roosevelt so the name probably didn't have the cutesy/child association when he was entering adulthood that it does today.

OP, I think Teddy is a really lovely name for a little boy but agree with giving him a more grown-up option on his birth certificate.

rootsandwings89 · 14/02/2023 12:18

Teddy is a popular name, so in a few years there will be lots of teenagers called Teddy. They'll probably shorten it to Ted if it's not deemed as "cool" 😂

rootsandwings89 · 14/02/2023 12:19

I also love the name teddy 🥰

Mariposista · 14/02/2023 12:19

Can you seriously imagine a grown man with a job called Teddy? He isn't a dog.
Edward is a lovely name however.

Englishash · 14/02/2023 12:25

No no no

badgergirly · 14/02/2023 12:27

I used to quite like it but I think it's become a bit common/popular.

tulipsunday · 14/02/2023 12:49

Please use Edward as the full version with Ted/Teddy as a nickname if needed

OldTrot · 14/02/2023 13:26

I was slightly ahead of the curve with the name Teddy - mine will be 17 this year.

And he's a Teddy on his birth certificate too! Shock horror!

And weirdly - nobody has ever keeled over or anything on hearing his name. He goes by Ted usually.

V popular name

OldTrot · 14/02/2023 13:36

So go for it OP! There were no Teddy's about 17 years ago and people 'become' their names.

Mine is 6 foot tall - trust me, Teddy just suits him.

EachandEveryone · 14/02/2023 13:36

Ted is a fab name for a man I’ve known a couple in my time and it suits all different kinds of blokes. I don’t think you need to even use Edward.

Pinkdafodils · 14/02/2023 13:41

Teddy bears were named after Teddy Roosevelt so the name probably didn't have the cutesy/child association when he was entering adulthood that it does today.

That's interesting. I had no idea where Teddy Bears 🧸 got their name from.

Pinkdafodils · 14/02/2023 13:42

Mine is 6 foot tall - trust me, Teddy just suits him.

All I imagine is a fluffy 6 foot Teddy 🧸 Grin

emmathedilemma · 14/02/2023 14:02

FadoFado · 13/02/2023 16:51

there are quite a lot babies and toddlers called Ted and Teddy these days. It's definitely one of those names that's exploded in popularity in the last 2 or 3 years.

I agree, everywhere you go there's one!

Suedomin · 14/02/2023 14:06

Call him Teddy but name him Edward or Theodore.. That way he will have choices. My DH was named something similar and he has always wished his parents had called him by the full formal name , as something cute when a child isn't as cute for a middle aged man and it has caused him embarrassment

Elphame · 14/02/2023 14:07

I have a breed of dog that looks very like a teddy bear. Every other one is named Teddy.

Go for a more formal name for the legalities to give the baby options later and use Teddy as his daily name.

Suedomin · 14/02/2023 14:13

How do people get Teddy from Edward? I could understand Tedward, but surely Edward naturally shortens to Ed or Eddy??
Ted, Ned and Teddy are well known diminutives for Edward..

HoldingTheDoor · 14/02/2023 14:17

Teddy is ridiculously twee even on a toddler. It's just about ok as a nickname but not as a first name.

Pinkdafodils · 14/02/2023 14:19

Ted, Ned and Teddy are well known diminutives for Edward..

They may be 'well known' but they are certainly not intuitive... unless it's Tedward or Nedward Grin

I think it's helpful when the name and nickname have the same initials.

Pinkdafodils · 14/02/2023 14:21

So kids nowadays still have Teddy bears 🧸 ?
