Using my maiden name as a first name for dd

Expecting a dd maiden name is Clemence.
Would it weird to use it? or nice because it keeps the family name?

I don't see why not. I think it's a really pretty name.

Reugny · 11/02/2023 23:39

Only weird if your DD truthful answers what is your mother's maiden name on form. For security reasons unless it's a form for background checks you lie.

CC4712 · 12/02/2023 00:01

Are you likely to have other children? What name will they have?

If I was a younger sibling and had no family name/historical family name- I personally might feel a bit left out and that the older sibling was favoured.

Sorry- just my own thoughts.

Streamside · 12/02/2023 00:02

It's a beautiful name, where I live it's very common for men to have their mother's maiden names. It can lead to some confusion and a friend with effectively two surnames finds that people mix them up all the time. There's little risk of that for you and I think it's a lovely idea.

ditalini · 12/02/2023 00:20

This is an old tradition in Scotland. Mostly sons, but I have a female ancestor with a very unusual first name for a girl which was her mum's maiden name.

I love Clemence - go for it!

I disagree re: other children feeling slighted - we all have family names (albeit middle names) in my immediate and extended family that are loosely based on birth order and no-one is miffed that they got named after uncle x rather than grandpa y.

SunsetStrip · 12/02/2023 00:21

I know someone who did this, but a boy. Super cool name too.

Uncle X vs Grampa P is different to Mom's name vs Uncle Rick's middle name tho. It is worth thinking about what they'd want to do with future children so they feel equal.

Personally I think children should have a name that's theirs, so I'd use it in the middle.

ChocAuVin · 12/02/2023 00:24

It’s lovely. One of my DC has my mum’s maiden name.

Stichintime · 12/02/2023 00:29

Only as a middle name.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 12/02/2023 00:31

I personally don't like the name but like the idea.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 12/02/2023 00:32

Wont YOU feel weird calling her your surname that you had for years?

Thedogscollar · 12/02/2023 00:33

@familyname
Oh I really like this. I work in maternity and haven't heard this name. It's lovely.

Very good point, especially if you still have family members with that surname

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 12/02/2023 00:33

I think the name is quite pretty. She'd be Clem Clemmy before the end of the first day though!

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2023 00:36

Yes it’s nice.

I prefer it to Clementine - less twee

restie · 12/02/2023 00:40

My son Flynn is named after my Nan's maiden name...i love the significance it holds.

This is what I thought. Won't it feel like you're in the army, just calling out your own surname all the time?

I wouldn't use the name regardless because I think she will be Clem/Clemmy and I think that's awful! Far too close to clammy to be a nice name!

AlwaysLatte · 12/02/2023 00:46

It's lovely. Some of my relatives have their mothers' maiden names as first names.

aonbharr · 12/02/2023 01:07

Not a bad name at all, never met one. Compared to some suggestions you see on this board, it is beautiful!

SnackyOnassis · 12/02/2023 03:33

Not at all weird - my first name is my mum's maiden name and it's never been strange, it feels lovely to carry forward something that would otherwise have disappeared from her line.
Most people in my day to day life wouldn't know my mum's maiden name so it's just mine.
For forms that ask for mother's maiden name, usually that's as the answer to a security question so nobody is looking at that either!!

TheOriginalEmu · 12/02/2023 04:45

My Daughter has my maiden name as her middle name, and I often call her by it as a pet name. I don’t think it’s weird at all.

That's not really weird but actually now you've said that I can see that maybe being an issue if she tells lots of people she's got her mums maiden name for her first name.

Hopefully people ask harder security questions though.

Twoinapod · 12/02/2023 06:38

Absolutely as a middle name, definitely not as a first name. Its really not a nice name plus all the issues already mentioned

Paq · 12/02/2023 06:45

It's a lovely name and a lovely association. I don't particularly agree with any of the objections raised.

You are supposed to make up a name that you can remember as there are people whose mothers haven't changed their name or their mother's name is theirs as well. (I have one kicking me at the moment.)
