Romy / Romalie ?

I'm expecting baby No 1 and love Romy but
feel it's potentially a bit too nicknamey. I don't love the spelling of Romilly (risk of nn becoming Milly which isn't for us) - but came across alternative spelling of Romalie which I love.

It doesn't appear to have a meaning though - can anyone shed any light? I feel the meaning a name holds is important.

Thanks!

Romilly is nice. Originally a surname but there is a 1940s actress.

Abra1t · 11/02/2023 17:43

the reason for not using this spelling doesn’t seem a good one.

TheOriginalEmu · 11/02/2023 17:44

I personally much prefer Romy to Romilly/Romalie.

I found Romelia and Romalia which mean glorious heroine/from Rome.

also this: A cursory search to me indicates that it seems somewhat popular (but by no means exclusively so) among people with Spanish surnames and that Romali is “Indian” for “strand of hair” (not sure how reputable that is). Roomali or Rumali is apparently a term in an Indian language meaning handkerchief and there’s apparently a lot of restaurants called roomali rota referring to something called “handkerchief bread”

The Romy I know is actually Ramona.
I think Romilly is lovely, Romalie seems like it would be pronounced Rom ah lee rather than like Romilly.

SatInMySpottyOnesie · 11/02/2023 17:55

I know a Romy, she is from an Irish family and she is lovely ☺️
I like it 😍

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/02/2023 18:00

I love Romy and would've used it myself but had 3 DS's.. one is Rowan!

Abra1t · 11/02/2023 18:09

Romy is nice too.

Laure in Spiral called her baby Romy, I’d anyone else like French crime series.

Velvetbee · 11/02/2023 18:22

Romy and Romilly are beautiful. I’m not keen on the other spelling.

FadoFado · 11/02/2023 20:35

I prefer Romy to any of the longer versions. I've googled to see what Romy Schneider's birth name was and apparently she was Rosemarie, so that might be an option?

She was amazingly beautiful.

(The fact Boris Johnson has a daughter called Romy puts me off it a bit. But that's just me)

Romy / Romalie ?
ratticus4 · 11/02/2023 20:40

I know 3 Romys. Two older teens who are Romy and an older woman - 70s - who is really a Rosemary.

I like Romilly. Maybe use that for the birth certificate and tell everyone it’s Romy. Works for the Lotties, Joes and Freddies I know who are formally named Charlotte, Joseph and Frederick.

ClemmyTine · 11/02/2023 20:47

What about Romaine??

lettuce

🤣🤣.

It is a name. I know of two ladies called this.
It could be spelt Romaine ?

Delorestormborn · 11/02/2023 21:10

I like Romy and Romilly. Not keen on Romalie - it doesn't look as nice.

Still lettuce. Grin

Ot it could be Lettice, nn Romy as in romaine, but that might be too roundabout.

ShandaLear · 11/02/2023 21:15

Rosalie is better than Romalie. Romy or Romilly are better.

RachCBas84 · 11/02/2023 21:26

We liked Romola, but it didn't suit when he came out a boy!

ClemmyTine · 11/02/2023 21:32

🤣

*Romayne!!!
Or Rapunzel, think that has something to do with lettuce as well?....

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/02/2023 21:34

I think you are better with Romola or Ramona nn Romy, that way you don’t need to worry about Milly or make up funny spellings (which will annoy the bejesus out of her).

Hard no to Romaine

Ramona is lovely and Romy is a nice name on its own but agree maybe needs a more adult form. What about Romany?

silentkite · 11/02/2023 21:50

Love the name Romy and don't think it sounds nick namey at all. Makes me think of Romy Schneider.

Summer2424 · 11/02/2023 21:50

Hi @flo309 Romy is the first name in my list of baby names, i used have a childhood friend called Romy, love the name x

Summer2424 · 11/02/2023 21:52

It can be spelt Rommie too x

liveforsummer · 11/02/2023 21:53

I'd pronounce the two differently

silentkite · 11/02/2023 22:09

I've noticed that there's a move away from people putting the 'proper' formal name on the birth certificate it feels kind of old school. Names like Theo, Jack, Harry, Toby, Kate, Ella, Bella, Sadie, Lily, all are 'nicknames' (the list goes on and on haha). Just go with the name you like.
