Expecting DD1 and I’m in love with the name Lucia.

I’m getting cold feet a little as I know there are a few ways of pronouncing this name and I don’t want to set her up for a lifetime of correcting people.

We would pronounce it the Italian way ‘Loo Chee Ah’ but we don’t have any Italian links other than we love to holiday there!

I’d be interested to know what mumsnetters think…

I’d pronounce it Loo-chee-a as the default pronunciation, the Italian way. I know two and both are pronounced that way. The Spanish way is fine too -but it would not be a default pronunciation. And “Loosha” would be very odd.

It’s a beautiful name but I would pronounce it Loo-see-a as there is not ‘ch’ in the name. So if you want it pronounced with a ‘ch’ and you don’t live in Italy she will be constantly correcting people I reckon.

There is a “ch” in the name…in Italian. “Ci” is “ch”.

@Teeshirt , but not everyone will know that it's using the italian pronunciation.
It's a latin name, and can have one of several valid pronunciations.

It's a bit like using a name like David and expecting people to use the french pronunciation

I think the level of discussion on here reaffirms my hesitations. Thanks everyone so much for your input, it’s much appreciated :)

You’d have to accept either pronounciation. Or just take the easy option and go for Lucy
