Zara or Alexa (likely to be nn Lexi)?

surname is a well known two syllable name ending in er.

Zara is beautiful. Alexa is too but as mentioned annoyingly unusable now. How about Alexis though?

I did wonder if the Amazon thing is too much of an issue. I don’t have one and neither do any of the houses I visit regularly so it’s not a particularly strong association for me

But they will get bullied at school. Trust me.

@RP2211 Or not even bullied. Just everyone making the exact same 'jokes' over and over and over again.

I don't think people should avoid baby names they like due to 'they might get bullied', kids should be taught not to bully. But this is like calling your child 'Hoover' or 'Google'. Just don't.

Both Alexa and Zara are beautiful names. I this Alexis or Alexandra would be a better compromise because of the tiresome Alexa jokes.

I don't agree Alexa is ruined now at all. It's a lovely name. I am sure people can distinguish between a human and a machine.

Sorry OP but I agree with pp - Alexa is unusable now and has plummeted in popularity as a result. Only 15 were named in 2021.

Zara is lovely.

You cannot use Alexa, but Alexandra nn -Alexis or just Alexis would be fine.

I can't explain how annoyed I am that the name Alexa has basically being ruined forever now.

I absolutely love that name for a girl - why couldn't Amazon have chosen a shit name instead.

The other alternative we thought was Alexia with potentially Lexi for short, but I would worry it's still too similar to Alexa

I'm pregnant with a boy so haven't had to worry about this in the end anyway

Well the worst is for those who are already named Alexa. Until recently it seemed to be an increasingly popular choice (well, it was always cropping up on MN baby names board anyway!) so there are quite a few Alexas around. I feel sorry for them!
There is a pressure group call “Alexa is a human” which sought to persuade Amazon to change Alexa’s name to something non human because human Alexas are being bullied. But of course, Amazon couldn’t give a shit.

I did read that Zara went up to number 16 last year so abit of a surge in popularity?

Maybe somewhere but not in England and Wales. It was #69 in 2021.
