Every time there is a thread about the name Ursula, it seems to get totally different responses. One thread will be 90% really positive about the name, the second thread will be hating it for the sea witch connection.

I posted about it once and everyone hated it! I saw another thread a few months later and it was almost unanimously loved. So, once and for all: Ursula. What do you think?

Does the sea witch thing make it unusable? I think is got a lovely fresh sound - rare but very old with a strong history. I like the saint connection and I love the meaning!

We live abroad so there’s no sea witch connection here, but got family and friends in the UK (and might end up there one day) to need advice for a British point of view!

I love it

HamFrancisco · 05/02/2023 05:48

I don’t think it’s a particularly attractive name, it’s a bit like Bridget or Hannah for me, a plain sounding name.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 05/02/2023 09:38

Its okay as a sound and looks pretty. However, I am in my 30s in UK so do associate with 1) the sea witch villain and 2) Phoebe's sister in friends who is not a pleasant personality

Enko · 05/02/2023 09:38

I dont think it's attractive but nor do I hate it.

I guess that makes me a "maybe "😁

SallyWD · 05/02/2023 09:57

Never heard of the sea with thing. I do think it's a lovely name. It does sound rather middle aged, upper class to me though.

R0ckets · 05/02/2023 10:02

I've known 2 and both hate it for the sea witch connotations and because it sounds/reads like the noise you make when showing disgust at something. They were both also not keen on the fact it had no good shortenings so they instead went by different names (one a middle name and one a family nickname unrelated to Ursula).

I'm sure are some out there who like it but I can't say I'm a fan after hearing how much these 2 disliked their moniker.

Zonder · 05/02/2023 10:04

It makes me think of bears so I wouldn't use it.

Perhapser · 05/02/2023 10:06

I love it and always think of the little bear meaning rather than sea witch associations. Would have certainly chosen if had another dd. Perhaps better as a middle name if you’re concerned about reception?

GoldenGorilla · 05/02/2023 10:08

Hate it sorry. It’s not even the sea witch (or ohoebes sister), it’s just a nasty sound.

Beamur · 05/02/2023 10:09

I love it, but think it's hard to say. Considered it for a middle name for DD but didn't in the end.

Neolara · 05/02/2023 10:11

I don't like it. Sorry.

kitcat15 · 05/02/2023 10:15

It’s an ugly name

BungleandGeorge · 05/02/2023 10:15

I think it has negative associations in the UK/US. Sometimes names are not common for a reason. But you’re not in the UK so why worry. Once someone is called a name it begins to lose the associations and relatives will associate it with your child.

Blablablablaba · 05/02/2023 10:15

I really wouldn't! I think most connect it with the big ugly octopus villain in the little mermaid.

Hoppinggreen · 05/02/2023 10:18

I don’t hate it but I know one in her 60s and she has hated it all her life.
It’s quite a big clunky name

Boneweary · 05/02/2023 10:22

Not really keen on the ‘urr’ sound, but I have to admit the first thing I think of is the sea witch, and I’m not even hugely into Disney. I was about ten when The Little Mermaid came out, though.

There was a baby called Simba at DS’ swimming, and that had a few ‘aww, lion’ comments but that’s not as negative.

BananaHamhock · 05/02/2023 10:31

If you name your child Ursula I feel
Awful for her. What a 'poor unfortunate soul' 🧜🏻‍♀️🐙

Doowop1919 · 05/02/2023 11:02

For me it's not even the little mermaid connection. It sounds awful to me, slimey for some reason 😅

Rauha · 05/02/2023 11:04

I don't like it, there's a harshness to it

Marcipex · 05/02/2023 11:09

I love the meaning but not the sound. As the owner of a clunky name, I would say no. But I have no idea of the sea witch thing.

Dinodelight · 05/02/2023 11:10

I don’t like it, the ‘Urrr’ sounds outs me off it. It’s not a very pretty name in my opinion.

DalaiLlama · 05/02/2023 11:12

I love it and think of DH Lawrence before The Little Mermaid.

Sandysandwich · 05/02/2023 11:15

The sea witch connection wouldn't bother me- I think that character is quite cool.
But I think the name sounds unpleasant, like curse, fistula etc

BananaCocktails · 05/02/2023 11:17

Without the witch connotation, it’s a horrible name anyway ..I’m sorry..
The sound you make when you say it is also awful. URRRRsula

It is very middle-aged, larger ladies name, it’s not very nice

romdowa · 05/02/2023 11:17

I love it and was my baby name when I was pregnant but I had a son.
