I’m trying to find a Sri Lankan Tamil name for my first baby boy due in July this year.

I really like Athiyan amd it’s meaning (one on top) but just wondered how it would be pronounced in school.. mah I ask a) if people like this name and b) how you would pronounce it please?

I'd pronounce it Ath-ee-ann.

How is it pronounced? I wouldnt worry about school, people will learn the correct pronunciation.

youmustbemad · 01/02/2023 13:27

My guess would be ATH-ee-yan, and it's lovely! What's the correct pronunciation?

Viviennemary · 01/02/2023 13:27

I would bobably say Ath i yan. With the i sounding like I in bit. It sounds quite a nice name.

Pardon44 · 01/02/2023 13:28

I'd say it like this.

In my head I think I first read it like
Ath-i-yan.
Now I've seen the other posters put
Ath-ee-yan that does sound better.
I think it's a really nice name.

urrrgh46 · 01/02/2023 13:33

i'd go Ath-eye-un or Ath-eye-ann.

LeafHunter · 01/02/2023 13:33

A- th - e - an

Kanaloa · 01/02/2023 13:34

To be honest I’d probably ask a parent if I saw this on my register if I couldn’t find a good pronounciation video online - just ‘how is this said, I want to make sure to get it right.’

On first glance I’d go for Ath-ee-un.

Thank you for all the replies- I say it as

Aathi-yen

The first part (aathi) means beginning in Tamil so I assume that’s why I prolong the ‘a’ but I’m so happy it’s not difficult 🤗

The ‘th’ in some names sometimes becomes a ‘t’ like in the river Thames but I think as long as it’s not at the beginning it should be fine.

I think I’ve found my name!
