Are Fraser and Foster to similar?

Happylove1 · 30/01/2023 16:38

I have a DS Fraser and DD Darcie
currently looking at names for baby number 3 and me and DP can’t decide on many names that we both like. The only one we both like at the moment is Foster-Jude but after discussing it with my parents they said that Foster and Fraser were way to similar. We kind of see where they are coming from but think they are different enough.
We have no other name options if baby number 3 is a boy and don’t know what to do

Personally I don’t like Foster as a first name, but that’s not the point of my post. What I wanted to say is don’t give 2 brothers the same initial, it is a right pain with post, bank accounts, doctors letters etc. You might distinguish them with different middle names but you can’t rely on anyone else doing that.
I have a DS and DH with same first initial and it does cause privacy issues.

Never knew that the spelling of Raurie was weird-
DP’s grandfather was a Raurie and that’s where we got the name from
DP is Scottish therefore that’s how Fraser came about
our other children are teens so this was quite a surprise baby and our taste in names has changed quite a bit,I’ve never liked traditional names and much prefer more unique ones

But Ruiari IS traditional. Very much so. It’s not spelt how you think though. DP should double check his GF’s birth cert.

What's your child's name?
Foster
Sorry, what's your foster child's name?

It' a hard no from me, even without the Fraser. Go for Jude.

Doidontimmm · 30/01/2023 19:13

Fraser is definitely not unique in Scotland!

msbevvy · 30/01/2023 19:15

How about Finbar?

ArtVandalay · 30/01/2023 19:15

Foster? 😆 Don’t be daft.

What happens if he became a doctor who lived in Gloucester ?

mathanxiety · 30/01/2023 19:23

Are you serious?
You cannot call a child Foster, regardless of what the sibling names are.

There are literally thousands of other names out there.

Ruairi (that is the correct spelling) is lovely.

Jude is lovely (as is Fraser). Foster is not great and the hyphenated Foster-Jude is even less great.

Just use Jude or go back to the drawing board (imo)

Enko · 30/01/2023 19:40

I'm going to go against the grain here and say.

1 I don't mind Foster. I've heard much worse imo..

  1. I wouldn't get worked up on too similar. They are adults living apart for more time than boys at home together.
3 if its your favourite name then go for it. 4 I've never liked Jude and do not get the love for it on mn.
Blueisthecolor · 30/01/2023 19:43

I love Fraser as name not so much Foster. I only know that as a surname. However, there is an ex footballer called Fraser Forster (I know slightly different) and that's all I can think about!

Thatsshallot1967 · 30/01/2023 19:50

As per a PP suggestion Declan is nice. Quite a cool combination: Fraser, Darcie & Declan.

LaMadrilena · 30/01/2023 20:16

Why don't you call him Judith? That's six letters and he can be Jude for short.

Happylove1 · 30/01/2023 20:46

@mathanxiety I am really loving the suggestion of Fergus
but is Fraser and Fergus again to similar?

Fergus is great and fine with Fraser.

Also Magnus.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2023 22:08

Yes they are too similar. And hyphenation is always a hard no. Also foster is a bit weird (because of fostering / adoption)

Fergus is great

Finlay

Finton

FatSealSmugSoup · 30/01/2023 22:10

Please go for Fergus, your own suggestions are overwhelmingly appalling and/or misspelled.

Unique has 6 letters though if you just need to make the point.

RenoDakota · 30/01/2023 22:16

Jude is lovely, OP.
For what it's worth, I put my foot down over a ridiculous middle name tradition in my exes family.
There were no comebacks, no repercussions and she has a beautiful middle name, not a stupid one.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 30/01/2023 22:23

MuckyPlucky · 30/01/2023 17:27

That’s got too many letters tho! DH’s ‘family tradition’ decrees males (only males!) have to have 6-letter names. Random.

Adopte

Finlay and Fergus both sound better than Foster.

I mean, not to my taste, but fine names with a Scottish feel and both fitting your weird theme of having 6 letters per name.

Myself, I wouldn't give brothers the same initial, but I suppose with such an age gap there will be less cross over with post, etc, or listing at the same places.
