Choosing a first name

Ok so we have gone about things backwards and have agreed middle names based on family members no longer with us.
We’ve got a few first name options and would love to hear thoughts on which flow well. I feel like I can’t see the wood for the trees at this point!!
We have;

Arabella Eileen Ruth
Margaux Eileen Ruth
Hero Eileen Ruth
Alma Eileen Ruth
Elizabeth Eileen Ruth
Evelyn Eileen Ruth

We have an odd surname so limited on names that go with it but would be open to ideas. TIA

I’d focus more on a first name than middle names as that’s what the baby will be called every day. Middle names rarely get used. I wouldn’t use Hero, it’s often a male name in certain parts of the world and with an unusual surname might be a bit too much.

I like Elizabeth and Evelyn as long as the various pronunciations for it don’t bother you. I don’t like the others on list.

First name that comes to mind is Heather

I like Alma and Margaux (love this spelling - it's the more popular French one!)

Pinkdafodils · 24/01/2023 17:56

I meant Margaux is the more common spelling in France (rather than Margot)

And Margot is pronounced Margott in Germany.

I would just focus on the flow with your surname.
I'm not keen on Hero as its a lot to live up to, and Alma isn't my favourite.
Elizabeth and Evelyn are nice and classic.

IMO Elizabeth is one of the best girls names. It's timeless, ageless, classic, lots of shorten formed, might be a couple of others along the way but not tons of them.

I don’t love hero.

Have you been influenced by Enid Blyton in your childhood? Elizabeth, Alma and Arabella I think are all characters in The Naughtiest Girl in the School.

Alma Pudden who was pale and sad and overweight, described as pudding like.
Arabella - prissy frilly and obsessed with her looks, described as doll-like.
And of course Elizabeth who is the naughtiest girl in the school because she wants to go home to her pony…

Evelyn is tricky because of the pronunciation and because it shortens to Evie.

Margaux - I guess I’d prefer Margot as it looks very frilly.

of the lot I’d choose Elizabeth

Elizabeth

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/01/2023 19:42

I’d narrow it to Elizabeth or Arabella

Margo/Margot (please don’t spell it Margaux) and Evelyn are lovely but overused, Hero to hard to live with and Alma sounds like a sad barmaid.

Elizabeth is very popular but it always is so it’s a classic with the benefit of many short forms. Arabella is nicely jazzy, although it’s very frilly and there are A LOT of bel names around.

I’d probably put Ruth before Eileen for these two.

Not keen on hero but others are nice

I agree with others. Most people aren’t going to know your daughter’s full name. Concentrate on how it goes with the surname and which you like.

I never understand people who reject their favourite name because another flows better with a middle name that no one will ever call them.
