All the girl names are nice but I LOVE Ishbel (half Scots) and it's much less common than the others as far as I can see.

Boy names, I'm not keen on Ira, like the others. Like Kit and Christo as diminutives for Christopher if you don't like Chris.

If you like Ishbel, what about Elspeth?

Gorgeous name but I know a few baby Elspeths. No Ishbels.

Boys:
Ira - no
Ivor - I prefer Ifor, but it's ok
Christopher (not a fan of Chris though) - yes but Kit's too popular
Gabriel - not keen but it's ok. Will be shortened
Peter - yes
Thomas - yes

Girls:
Ishbel - not keen. Isabel(le)/Isabella overused
Ivy - no, garden weed
Ava - dislike it
Tamsin - really like

Ira - it’s Ok in an old man sort of way. It’s probably about to come madly into fashion.

Ivor - as above but a bit less so.

Christopher (not a fan of Chris though) - if you don’t like Chris don’t use it. You could try imposing Kit but it won’t necessarily work. Cassian maybe?

Gabriel - nice enough, overused. Gideon maybe?

Peter - technically due a revival but Pete is awful. Patrick is much nicer IMO and mostly they do get called Patrick (outside of Ireland anyway)

Thomas - nice.

Girls:
Ishbel - love it. So underused

Ivy - nice but overused. Zoe? Ida?

Ava - nice but done to death. Aster, Astra, Elva.. ???

Tamsin - always makes me think of Tampax, and is slightly awkward to say, apart from that very 70s. I think Tamara is better somehow, or Tara, Natasha, Saffron have similar vibes without the suggestion of feminine hygiene products (you know how kids are.)

Ivor is lovely and Tamsin

Bonusnap · 24/01/2023 21:14

Thanks for all your opinions. We're leaning towards Ivor for a boy and Ishbel for a girl. Would have chosen Tamsin but as we already have a child with name beginning with T I'm not keen on two names with the same first initial. Sounds a bit twee when they're said together unfortunately.

I love Ava. It's popular but it's a lovely classic name, which is why.

Lcb123 · 24/01/2023 21:32

Ivy is lovely. I wouldn’t chose Christopher if you don’t like Chris

HallieHufflepuff · 24/01/2023 22:37

I like Peter
And Ava/Tamsin (Tammy?) ❤

daysleepers · 24/01/2023 23:27

Not keen on any of your boys names tbh. Gabriel at a push.

Tamsin, I like that.

But go with what you love!

BridieConvert · 29/01/2023 17:57

Ishbel and Tamsin are lovely, I think Ava is overused now and Ivy is also becoming more popular but both perfectly nice names.

I like Ira and Gabriel, Thomas and Peter are perfectly nice just a bit boring to me. Christopher would 100% get shortened so wouldn't go with that if you're not happy with that. Not sure how to pronounce Ivor (is it eye-vor or ee-vor? so I would personally avoid.

CherryAndCreamCake · 29/01/2023 17:59

Peter, Thomas, Ava, Tamsin. My picks.
