Please help me find boy's name!

Hi all. I'm 30 weeks and really struggling to settle on a boy's name (we don't know what we're having but have decided on a girl's name). Tbh we're really struggling to find pretty much any boy's name that doesn't repel at least one of us.. We're a British-Spanish family living in Spain so ideally it would be a name that isn't too difficult to pronounce in the two languages and ideally could be familiar to people in both countries but that's not essential. There are many names that fit the bill but what makes it tricky is that I only like really quite unusual names. Mateo, Mario, Lucas, names like that are far too common for me. I sometimes find (Spanish) names that I like but then DH says they are "old man names". 🙄I would also consider Scandinavian names and also like nature-themed names or names from Greek/Roman mythology. 2 or 3 syllables preferable. Names I've considered include Fabian, Cassian and Marcel, to give an idea. Any suggestions would be very welcome!

I also love Julian but found the pronunciation a bit difficult as Joolian and Who-lian were maybe a bit too different from one another for me. I love Roberto, too, but that's not an unusual one.

The old man names trend hasn't reached Spain yet! So it would be more like the prospect of calling a baby Barry or Gary or Malcolm or something nowadays, for a British person. What's fashionable in Spain atm is very short names like Roc, Jan, there's even a name Iu (pronounced more or less like Ew!) Some names suggested are already taken by people in our lives, ie. Reuben, Gabriel, Marcel, I like those a lot but can't use.
I know Esteban will be deemed an old man name without even asking! 😅
I like Caspian a lot, I'll put that to DH again although I think we have previously discussed it.
Diego, Sergio, Leo, Max all a bit too commonly-used for me and also have friends/family with those names.
Maël still a strong contender!
Thanks everyone again and thanks for your kind wishes apapuchi!

I know someone with very similar criteria, and they have a Constantine.

All names from a fabulous Catalan drama series called Merli.

Not Jordan. Jordi

I really love Constantine, not sure if DH will think it old-fashioned or too sort of grand but I'll put it to him!
Jorge would be like calling a baby Jack or Oliver in the UK.

Leon (suspect that might be quite popular, though)
Leander
Eric/Erik
Orlando
Emil
Clement
Yannick
(not quite sure what would happen to the pronunciation on the last two)
Valentin

I really love Javier, Pablo and Paulo-no idea how trendy they are in Spain though

Nightwithhertrainofstars · 20/01/2023 08:27

Javier, Pablo, Paolo would have the same kind of feel as Dave, Steve, Paul in the UK.
Like Merlí a lot and we are in Catalonia but I have a feeling that it was previously rejected by DH. Would also like a Catalan name. Biel and Axel taken by friends' DC.
I liked Valentí but apparently an old man name.. 🙄See also Clemente. I'm coming to the conclusion that I am less fussy than DH!
Eric very trendy in Spain currently.
Emilio would be an old man name but I like Emil, I'll see what Dh thinks.
I like Leon but think it's a bit similar to Leo which is very common and taken by family member. DH comes from a very big family..
This thread is really helping me to think things through and consider new possibilities so thanks again!

Oh, meant to say, do you think Emil would be too similar to SIL Emily?

Umberto? I love Umberto. Probably in the old man camp.

YouSoundLovely · 20/01/2023 08:36

I don't think Emil is that similar to Emily really - the pronunciation is a bit different (Emil more with an eh sound at the beginning) (I am also of the mind that it wouldn't matter too much if it were similar and might even be quite a nice touch, but you seem to want to avoid any names similar to ones already used in your circles).

YouSoundLovely · 20/01/2023 08:38

Pascal (particularly as you will be having an Easter-ish baby)? (Suspect your dh will put it in the old man camp Grin ).

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's interesting the names that would be quite unusual in the UK but in Spain are very common. So Joaquín, Xavier, Santiago, Ignacio, Rafael for example are very common particularly amongst blokes in their 40's and 50's.
Love Heath but it would get butchered by Spanish pronunciation!!
Valerian was ruthlessly rejected by DH 😢
Maël is very interesting! It seems to be a traditional Breton name, I had never heard it before.
DH was obsessed with Gael which is absolutely too similar to our DD's name to use so this could be a very good compromise!
We are really seriously considering it, so thanks so much!

Pretty sure Valerian features quite a lot as one of the poisons in Agatha Christie novels so a lucky escape there.

I agree that Emil has quite a different sound to Emily so wouldn't necessarily be a problem. Umberto definitely an old man name!
Like Pascal, I've put that on the list.
Not too keen on Hector but it is a good example of a familiar name in both cultures.
We had considered Killian quite a bit but got quite a negative reaction from UK family to the idea, I think just to do with it starting with kill.
All I can think of when I consider Leandro is some terrible Spanish bf that Katie Price had about 10 years ago 😂
Like Elvio a lot! I'll see what Dh says, might be a bit out there for him.
Thanks!
