Elliot or Felix

I’m driving myself a bit mad - keep thinking I’ve chosen a name then going back to the drawing board. So I’m determined this is my final post and then I’ll go and live my life!

Here goes: Elliot or Felix (surname Marshall).

Worried about nicknames and keen to avoid anything mega posh, which in my mind would be like Tristan or Hugo (or maybe Sebastian).

Be kind :)

You have good taste in names. I have an Elliot and I also loved the name Felix but my Dh wouldn’t allow it and was adamant it was a cat’s name 😡.

My Elliot is 4 now and I love his name. We only ever really call him Elliot. Sometimes El or Els.

unicornglittersprinkles · 17/01/2023 13:59

I have a 6 year old Elliott and still love it as much as I did when we chose it. No-one at school shortens his name to anything. I sometimes call him El/Els around the house though. The only thing to be aware of is the two spellings thing i.e. Elliot or Elliott. I chose 2 l's and 2 t's because I thought it looked more balanced (and it's the spelling from E.T. which was DH's favourite childhood film) but it's 50/50 as to how people (even close family) spell it

Yes it’s going to annoy me!

I love both!

ManchesterMarcy · 18/01/2023 03:20

We know a Felix and he gets teased with Fe-Fe which sounds more like a poodle than a boy. Very weak and a bit posh. I would go with Elliot. I like the nickname Ells, it's less common and not feminine or weak.

twinkletwinkle89 · 18/01/2023 03:29

I associate felix to a cat sorry, so I would go Elliot

Blueberrywitch · 18/01/2023 03:40

definitely Felix! Elliot isn’t really a very nice sound. I know a Felix and he’s very handsome, clever and funny!

Blueberrywitch · 18/01/2023 03:42

And sorry to all the Elliot mothers out there! My opinion is based on my accent which makes vowels sound horrible and people don’t say the T

alotoftutus · 18/01/2023 04:44

I like both - I think Felix fits into the posher category that you are not so keen on though - perhaps because I know a few little upper middle class boys called Felix. I love the name but I think the cat connection would be too strong for me.

I also like Elliott but imagine the t would be dropped at the end - perhaps Ellis could work instead.

I would hold on to both names and see what suits your baby when he's born.

He’s a month old and nothing feels right

Love both names.
Felix was on my boys name short list

You don't seem to like either of these names enough to use so it's a bit irrelevant what others think.
Is there another name you prefer but are holding off from for some reason?

sunflowerdaisyrose · 18/01/2023 08:14

I much prefer Elliott (with two ts) but Max is still my favourite. I did know a really cool Felix who pulled off his name brilliantly so it grew on me a bit then but I wouldn't give it to a baby.

Elliot is lovely. Felix makes me think of cat food.

This. Love Elliot!

Nope, I’ve looked at every single name in the top 1000 and don’t like any! Can tell you a problem with every single one 😂

Dragon and cat is what comes to my mind when I hear these names, so I would not choose either.

BooCrew · 18/01/2023 08:54

I have a Felix and people generally seem to like it, although we occasionally get 'Phoenix?' which is an altogether different vibe!

Personally I love it, it's relatively uncommon still (although does seem to be having a surge... but it's no Oliver), but is a known and easily spelled name, it works in other European languages and I think it suits a child and an adult.

I do like Elliott too though! My other favourites were Max, Rex and Rowan.

I think we have similar taste. I love Max but doesn’t work with surname and partner vetoed Rowan. It’s so hard!

How old is he? Does he have any nicknames? I just can’t quite seem to say Elliot easily to the baby - 3 syllables is beyond me apparently 😂

Sorry to be that guy and throw another name in the mix but what about Ellis if you're struggling with the 3 syllables? The sound of Elliott with the 2 syllables of Felix.

I think if you're struggling to call him a name then it's not his name.

Thanks. I get what you’re saying but he’s a month old and I can’t call him anything so I think it’s probably just something I have to get over rather than not having the “right” one if that makes sense.

I think babies grow into their names. You have picked a couple of good ones. Even if you just tossed a coin at this point, there's no way you can get this wrong.

Laurdo · 18/01/2023 09:19

I'd pick one as his first name and the other as his middle name then if one doesn't suit as he gets older you can always use his middle name.

Sofiatheworst · 18/01/2023 09:23

You say you also considered either Elliot or Max, the common name then is Elliot so i would go with that as it’s the one you’ve been more consistent with. Fwiw I have a name that could get the “smell” nn and it’s never bothered me. Every Elliot I have known (work in education) has either been full name or El for short.
