Sophia or Elin?

TywysogesDew · 14/01/2023 22:22

We literally can't decide whether we should choose Sophia or Elin as a first name! Elin is Welsh as a nod to our roots, although we live in England. But is Sophia too popular?

What do you prefer?

Twoinapod · 15/01/2023 05:42

ILovePigsInBlankets · 15/01/2023 07:02

Elin is a lovely name- much prefer it to Sophia.

There's 3 Sophias in my DCs class at school, it's v popular.

Bobbycat123 · 15/01/2023 07:17

Love Elin!

toastofthetown · 15/01/2023 07:54

There were 12,096 baby girls born in England and Wales in 2021 whose names started with El-. For context Olivia was 3,649. While Elin itself isn’t very popular, that name group is and the name will blend in to a sea of Ella, Elsie, Eliza, Elodie etc. El- names to me are largely an unimaginative bore and Elin fits into that group for me. Though Sophia and Sofia are popular there were 5,242 girls whose names started with Soph and Sof so if popularity was a concern, I wouldn’t choose either to be honest.

Elin is very pretty

HappyFannyPetrow · 15/01/2023 07:57

Elin 1000%. Sophia has been done to death.

SallyWD · 15/01/2023 08:26

Elin is really beautiful. I've never been a fan of Sophia - I know so many and there's something a bit frilly about it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/01/2023 08:48

There are too many Sophias..

But Elin though lovely will end up one of a zillion Ellies

Olwen
Ffion
Serena
Sabrina
Sanchia

maybe..

I know a teenage Welsh Elin who has never been called Ellie!

Sophia is beautiful and classic.

But it has become so overused in recent years, unfortunately

KirstenBlest · 15/01/2023 11:47

Elin is really nice but I'm not keen on the anglicised pronunciation. Will get mixed up with Ellie, Erin, Ellen, Eleanor/Elinor and other El- names
Sophia is pretty enough but it's very popular for ages and Sofia is popular too. I prefer Sophie.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/01/2023 11:51

"But Elin though lovely will end up one of a zillion Ellies
Olwen"

Olwen is an old woman's name for me as a Welsh speaker. And maybe not 'old' enough to be back in fashion.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 15/01/2023 11:51

I know a danish Elin in her 80s who is the most wonderful woman.

welcome2023 · 15/01/2023 11:53

Sophia / Sofia is very very common

It's one of those international names people from all backgrounds use same as Layla, Mia etc

TurquoiseDress · 15/01/2023 12:00

I do absolutely love the name Sophia, it was on my baby names list

There are so many of them- at nursery/pre school and in the primary school

Chose another name in the end, one which we liked more rather than because Sophia was so popular

I do like Elin as well, you definitely don't hear of (m)any around locally

Depends how much you like them

I do think Elin is a pretty name

That is very true about the El- names!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/01/2023 12:24

My experience of Elin is that it is short enough as it is, so doesn't get diminished to "Ellie". It stands outs from all the other El names because it end in a hard consonant sound, rather than a softer "a" or "ie".
