Thoughts on the name Gwendolen please. Nickname likely 'Gwen'.

Not a fan. Sorry.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/01/2023 19:45

I think Malory Towers, then Gavin and Stacey.

RhubarbFairy · 14/01/2023 19:47

I'd think you'd spelled Gwendoline wrong.

I'm not a fan. It makes me think of Gwendoline Mary Lacey from the Malory Towers book series, who was spiteful and spoiled.

greenspaces4peace · 14/01/2023 19:48

l love it and love the nn Gwen.

Galarunner · 14/01/2023 19:50

The mean, spoilt girl in Malory Towers!

NannyR · 14/01/2023 19:50

Gwendoline Mary lacey was my first thought too - I was a big fan of the books as a child and she wasn't a very nice character.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 19:52

How often would you use the full name?

Gwendolen keeps on autocorrecting to Gwendolyn on my phone - not sure which is the more usual spelling.

Regardless, it's very elegant imo. Gwen as a name in its own right is also nice, but has a different feel to it - more farmer's daughter than lady of the manor. Which vibe are you going for?

NannyR · 14/01/2023 19:53

Gwyneth is nice and you could use Gwyn or Gwen.

I think Gwendolen is the more original Welsh version, though happy to be corrected.

I've never read the Mallory Towers books and so I'm not familiar with that association.

I thought the most common spelling was Gwendolyn so there is potential for it being misspelled a lot. Not my personal taste at all but if you like it why not?

KirstenBlest · 14/01/2023 19:55

Gwendolen is welsh and is pronounced Gwen-DOL-en, not Gwendoline/Gwendolyn, which are anglicised spellings. I think just Gwen is nicer.

Reindear · 14/01/2023 19:55

I think I’d spell it Gwendolyn. I know a little girl called Gwen, a great nain called Gwennie and a nain called Gwenda so I think it suits all ages.

CastleTower · 14/01/2023 19:56

I would just use Gwen as the full name.

walkinthewoodstoday · 14/01/2023 20:05

It's a bit different. Is she going to be sent to private school? If not, I'd avoid.

Odd, just sounds like a lovely welsh name to me, doesn't sound posh at all - I feel like names like Amelia, Felicity, Charlotte etc. are all more 'private school'

Could do - just worry it sounds a bit abrupt with our surname.

I love Gwendolen! Not as sure about Gwen.

Hobbesmanc · 14/01/2023 20:27

Love it. Gwen and Gwennie are gorgeous names

Nimbostratus100 · 14/01/2023 20:28

I love it! But I would spell it Gwenolyn, and have the nickname Lyn

UnlikelyStar · 14/01/2023 20:28

I really like it!

nbee84 · 14/01/2023 20:31

What about Gwennan?

Marmite27 · 14/01/2023 20:33

I know a child with the middle name Gwendolyn after a Welsh aunt and a Gwendolen who goes by Lennie. I don’t know the providence.

Both are under 8.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2023 20:36

It’s Gwendoline (or Gwendolyn)

It’s OK, I like Gwen a lot

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2023 20:37

Nimbostratus100 · 14/01/2023 20:28

I love it! But I would spell it Gwenolyn, and have the nickname Lyn

Isn’t this a different name?

I like it much better though

walkinthewoodstoday · 14/01/2023 20:43

@Lilacbluecloud ok I missed that you are in wales. If you are not, then I think it stands out a bit. I don't dislike it!
