Camilla....

Firstly, I want to apologise as I feel like this has been done to death already, but I'm still no further forward and due any day now.

I have an orlagh, and whilst there are other names that I like (Eve, Eva, Anya and Thea) the one I love the most is Camilla. Given the obvious association, particularly in the current climate I thought it wouldn't be fair to name her Camilla, so was going with Camille. Since then, I've had my eyes opened to the whole pronunciation debate (Kah-mee/Ka-mill or Kuh-meal) and feel equally its unfair for her to spend a lifetime having to explain how to pronounce her name. Not even I'm sure of which pronunciation sounds nicest anymore!

Not really sure what I'm asking, more just thinking aloud I think, but can anyone offer any words of advice/ideas/alternatives perhaps?

I quite like Camilla and it’s not Diana which is so associated. The Camille I know pronounces it ka-meal.

of your other choices, eve and Thea are lovely too.

SummaLuvin · 12/01/2023 09:35

I would say Camille as Kuh-meal or Kah-meal (pretty much the same in my accent).

When you say associations in current climate with regards to Camilla, I assume you are talking about Camilla, Queen consort? I wouldn't let that stop me using a name I loved otherwise. She isn't universally loved, but hasn't committed any terrible crimes and I think the name is common enough that it isn't wholly associated with her.

I know a toddler and a teen called Camilla.
I can't see the name being problematic at all. It's a nice name.

I like Camilla more than Camille

There are more of them than the Queen consort (& without being crass she won't be around forever - she's got a good 70+ years on your dc!)

UsuallySuze · 12/01/2023 09:36

If you love Camilla, I would use that. She can always be Milly if she finds people associate it too much with HRH.

I quite like it, but I prefer Camelia as I met a Spanish (catalonian) Camelia and I thought that was lovely. Camelia might sound too frilly next to Orlagh though.
Camilla is lovely

Sorry no idea why that posted so much! Blush

Camilla is lovely, and so are the possible nicknames, Milly, Lily, Kay, Cal, Cally, etc

I teach several Camillas and have never made the connection to the Royals. I also teach Charless, williams, Harrys, Elizabeths, Georges etc without thinking of royals

inquisitorgeneral · 12/01/2023 09:50

If you like Camilla then I would just use it. Camilla was a name long before the current queen consort came along. And given her unpopularity, I doubt anyone is going to assume that she's the namesake.

There's also the Spanish/Portuguese form Camila (as in Cabello)... though some people might pronounce it like Camilla anyway, so it doesn't necessarily solve your problem.

LightHousePanda · 12/01/2023 11:43

I agree with the above post that given the queen consort's age she's most likely to be deceased before your child becomes an adult and isn't likely to be so memorable that people would continue to reference her.

I don't think the queen consort will draw any more negative attention to herself. She's going to remain quiet and just by the king's side.

stormelf · 12/01/2023 11:55

I like the name Camilla. My five year olds best friend is Camilla

AuntieStella · 12/01/2023 12:08

I never liked the name Camilla because she was the nasty cousin in the Pony For Jean books - realised that's a bit niche (esp as I think they've been out of print for decades!)

I don't think it's unusable because of the Queen, though, so if it's the variant you want, go for it

I think names with more than on pronunciation are a PITA, as you'll have to keep telling people which it is. I haven't got the patience for that, but perhaps you have!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 12/01/2023 12:55

Lovely name. It's one of those names which is fairly uncommon nationally but seems to have pockets of popularity. I know of a couple of primary classes with two Camillas, unexpectedly.

mumonherphone · 12/01/2023 14:47

I like Eve with Orlagh out of your choices.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 12/01/2023 19:00

I really like the name Camilla. I think it’s overdue a revival.

Hobbesmanc · 13/01/2023 08:53

It's really popular in Scandinavia. Does sound a little posh a nd pony club though.

Solido · 13/01/2023 08:55

Op, what about Carmen? They sound similar to me. The opera.

Camilla is lovely imo!! And it's definitely useable imo!

How I would pronounce Camille: CA-MEE or ca-MILL. I personally really don't like ca-MILL tbh.
