Cali for a girl

Ok, so thoughts on this?

Im not pregnant ATM but been just brainstorming a bit because we definitely want a sibling for our DS in the future. Before we knew if it’s a boy or girl we decided on a name Eden which I still love but recently I fell in love with name Cali.
No short for something else, just like that Cali. I know for someone it will be associated with California probably.
Also I don’t like middle names and our DS also don’t have one so won’t be using ( possibly) as a middle name.

I have a cat called Cali short for Calico….

i too would read it expecting it to be a shortening for a nickname

Yellowgreenpurple · 12/01/2023 19:42

Calliope is always suggested on these threads and I don’t know if it’s just me who thinks it’s the ugliest name … Blush

I like Cali. I prefer Cally but I like both. It will be misheard for Kelly, though.

AuntieStella · 12/01/2023 19:44

I would spell it Callie

I'd be wary of using Kali, because of the Hindu goddess

AliasGrape · 12/01/2023 19:55

There’s one in my family, I really didn’t like it when the name was announced - I don’t mind the sound of it just think the spelling looks incomplete and prefer Callie for that reason.

However ours is a cutie so obviously the name has grown on me now.

It has odd connotations in my opinion. I'd either think of California or the city in Columbia. There's also the cat in Paw Patrol. And I'd think of it as a nickname, not a full name. But this is probably just me.

Thatcatisdrivingmenuts · 20/02/2023 15:42

It's short for Caroline so I'd use that, and shorten whenever.

xprincessxjanetx · 21/02/2023 00:37

Nice enough name but much better spelt Callie.

CallieQ · 21/02/2023 00:57

Agree Grin

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/01/2023 13:48

I prefer Callie.

This, or I'd assume it was a nn

Mamaneedsadrink · 21/02/2023 01:03

Onnabugeisha · 12/01/2023 19:38

Nope, Goddess of Destruction? Not a good name to saddle a child with imho.

That's Kali (pronounced more like caar-lee)

octoberfarm · 21/02/2023 03:24

I prefer the Callie spelling, but do think it's a beautiful name.

CheerfulYank · 21/02/2023 03:42

I think it’s a nice name :) I know a few Callies and one little Cali. She is adorable!

However, that spelling always seems a bit unfinished to me. Plus I work in a liquor store and sell bottles on bottles of Snoop Dogg’s Cali Red, so it just reminds me of that at this point. I do love Snoop though… 🤔

So it’s not my favorite spelling but the name itself is very sweet, and if you like it you should use it!

SalviaOfficinalis · 21/02/2023 03:47

I also prefer Callie - lovely name.

Cali does make me think it’s short for California.

SlaveToTheVibe · 21/02/2023 03:49

M in the NW and it’s commonly used as a short hand for Caroline

user1492757084 · 21/02/2023 06:36

Is Cali pronounced as Call-ee or Kay-lee?
I love Calli, Callie and Cally (rhymes with shelley)
Calli sounds nice with Eden.
If you wanted a longer name you could have ..
Caroline or Carolyn, Callidora, Callista
For boys you could have Callum, Calgary, Calvin

ForeverMessy456 · 21/02/2023 06:42

@sparklyWand I'm from Scotland and know several babies/toddlers called Cali and have never associated with with Caledonian Uni (I went there btw)

I think once you know the child you just associate it with them.

Nimbostratus100 · 21/02/2023 06:43

its nice, but very common locally

Nimbostratus100 · 21/02/2023 06:44

it is also what a lot of Karens have become known as since the name Karen became derogatory

Nimbostratus100 · 21/02/2023 06:44

actually, that might be why it is so common locally!

Smorgs · 21/02/2023 06:47

Cali makes me think of the cat from paw patrol.

DelphiniumBlue123 · 21/02/2023 07:34

Yoyooo · 10/01/2023 16:59

Calista is nice

Urg no! sounds like blister.

DelphiniumBlue123 · 21/02/2023 07:35

Calle is a nicer spelling imo
How about Goldie OP?

BridieConvert · 21/02/2023 07:49

sparklyWand · 10/01/2023 16:21

I take it you are not in Scotland? Cali is commonly used to refer to "Glasgow Caledonian University".

My head went to Inverness cali thistle 😂

BridieConvert · 21/02/2023 07:50

But to answer the question, it's a lovely name and was on my list, but with the spelling Callie or Kallie
