Scottish Boys names

I like Gaelic names like Callan and Donal whereas OH likes strong Scotts like Jock and Hamish.

We are considering Munro which is commonly a surname but have researched that it is also a boy or girl first name.

Any thoughts, would you assume it was a family surname?

Thanks in advance.

What about Murdo?

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/01/2023 16:23

I’d assume you were really into hiking

It’s not terrible, but better as a middle name

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/01/2023 16:26

Kester
Gillies
Innes
Lorne
Douglas
Alistair
Alexander nn Sandy

are all great names IMO

Murdo also

I know a Munro, from Perthshire. He’s a lovely chap and I love the name. I like Innes too, and Alastair. I also have a bit of a soft spot for Sorley, by some accounts from Somhairle which in Gaelic means ‘summer wanderer’.

Oh those are lovely names. Innes is a cool idea, and his dad's favourite beer! The name Munro makes me think of a gentle but protective type of man, loyal, so I'm glad to hear that everyone who knows a Munro thinks fondly of them Smile

I love a good scottish name.
My favourite is Sorley but whenever I bring it up its pushed down. Not that Im having a baby anytime soon.
I also love Fearghas/Fergus and Gregor.

We have a Euan & a Blair. DH is Scottish. Also considered Keir, Ewart & Struan. Had to laugh at Lorne as I love it in a full Scottish breakfast! Munro is nice as well though.

I know a lovely boy called Munro. I also know a Nairn - I am in Fife

LightHousePanda · 06/01/2023 11:40

I think it's ok and could work. I've never met one. I was also going to respond like others have and offer Murdo as a suggestion as it's a first name and similar to Munro.

Ultravox · 09/01/2023 19:04

I think Munro is better as a middle name. It just screams rampant hillwalker to me. Prefer Murdo or Murray.

Love Innes (although from my experience in England it will be assumed that it is a female name)

I like the surname as first name so I’ll throw another few into the mix:

Forbes, Grant, Reid, Stirling, Gray, Sinclair - all would make strong Scottish first names IMHO

cheapskatemum · 12/01/2023 17:51

I know a 3yo Murray, who's Scottish. I'm pretty sure he was named after Andy Murray.

Beautiful names on this thread! Can I add Finlay?

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/01/2023 18:09

We considered these for our DS. We also liked the Formula One connection.

Sterling (rather than Stirling)
Murray

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/01/2023 18:18

Murdo

Autumnnewname · 12/01/2023 18:32

If I had another boy I would have gone for Innes, Struan or Finlay

Munro works though.

Accept problem with that one! In Scots. Sterling and Stirling very different. With English accent, and no post-vocalic "r", both sound the same! So, for that one, it very much depends on where you live! (also, why would you name you son after the UK currency???)

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/01/2023 19:25

@pairofrollerskates the alternative spelling was DH idea but I preferred the spelling used by Stirling Moss.
DH is from just outside Glasgow and I'm a Bristolian .

Nanalisa60 · 13/01/2023 19:37

Duncan
Lachlan
Harrison
Campbell

all good strong names
