Half way through pregnancy and DH and I have made limited progress with babys name. I feel like we’ve exhausted the list and nothing feels right, would love some recommendations please

Names on the list below but we seem to have found a problem with each one:

Henry - my friends dog is called this. DH thinks I’m being ridiculous but I see her a lot
Miles - like this but struggling to get over the measuring distance thing
Arthur - seems really popular at the moment, worried it would date ?
Spencer - DH’s favourite but to me it just doesn’t suit a baby, I don’t mind it though
Jack & James - DH likes and thinks they’re classic and timeless but to me they’re a bit dull
Edward - I love Edward but not keen on Ed or Eddie , and our friends have a Teddy.

They’re all lovely and working with kids I’ve heard them all lots of the recent years so yeah very popular. I had my son two days before I felt what suited him. The top two I liked absolutely did not and still don’t so I’m glad I waited. Don’t panic we found looking through film credits and getting some apps that are similar to tinder (look them up some are hilarious) helped us match a few! Congratulations and don’t worry the name will come to you. I have to say Miles is my favourite there x

Spencer I dislike because Im old enough to remember Frank. But for some reason Jenson feels similar?
Or if youre going more 40s movie star Spencer Tracy what about Flynn, Clark, Orson?

Frazzled2207 · 23/12/2022 10:12

No ideas but I feel your pain.
we had two sons and in both cases didn’t agree on names until several weeks after they were born!
it will eventually get sorted though.

in our cases we did trial a few names for a day or two after they were born. Fine to have a short shortlist but I personally find it a bit odd to agree on a name before you know what he looks like.

CaptBuckyOHare · 23/12/2022 10:22

Would changing the spelling of Miles to Myles help with the measuring distance qualm?

Edward could be shortened to Ned rather than Ed, Eddie, or Teddy.

Oneandabean · 23/12/2022 16:52

If you like miles how about Niall?

KirstenBlest · 23/12/2022 19:02

I like Miles and James from your list.
Not keen on Myles, and see Smile in Miles not distance.
You have plenty of time, even if you find a name, he might not look like the name.

I think Miles is lovely...

Northtosouth · 24/12/2022 09:51

Thanks all, some nice suggestions.
I like Ned but surname is an N and it’s a bit of a mouthful.

@Fivemoreminutes1 I like Xander, Rafferty and Jasper - going to suggest to DH.

Henry - make it nn Harry or Hal?

Miles - Giles instead?

Arthur - popular but so are both of the above.. Arnold?

Spencer - 80s estate agent, no.

Jack & James - Jack really is done to death. James is popular and nice but a bit dull as you say. Jamie and Jimmy are nice nns though

Edward - Ned as a nn? Or Woody?!

Other than Spencer, all the names you’ve picked are nice but popular to the point of overuse (and beyond in most cases)

Laurence nn Laurie
Patrick
Robert nn Bobby, Robbie or Robin
Thomas
Michael
Daniel
Matthew
Ernest
Arnold
John
Jonathan
Joss
Joel

are all less flogged right now

James (Jem?), Edward (although like you I'm not keen on the nn's apart from Ned), Henry (Hal?) or Jack for me - in that order. "Boring" perhaps - but they are timeless classics that can be livened up with less common nicknames if wanted (apart from Jack which is why I put that last), they also have the benefit of not risking any judgement of DS background or age, some great namesakes etc.

Arthur is too trendy, Spencer too wide boy for me, and Miles, well I've never been keen personally (don't know why - maybe because it rhymes with Piles (sorryGrin).

Other timeless classics - William, Joseph or Alexander (Xand? ) Mid ground - Max, Adam or Samuel? Or more uncommon now but still "classic" feeling - John, Hugh or Nicholas (Nico?)? Or slightly more quirky - Nathaniel, Evan or Owen?

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Miles has grown on me quite a lot in the last few days. It seems to be well known and a ‘proper’ name but not too trendy or popular which is kind of the criteria we were going for.
Anyone have any middle name suggestions if we went with Miles? It’s the front runner for now.

OP posts:
Snoopystick · 30/12/2022 15:39

Miles is lovely. Try some family names as the middle name, we went with my dad’s middle name for my DS’ middle name.

mathanxiety · 30/12/2022 15:53

Miles (orMyles) is lovely - a real name, recognizable but not one you run into every day .

Miles Arthur
Miles Edward
Miles Oliver
Miles Dominic
Miles Elliott
