We have a single syllable and (dull) surname and are struggling for boys name for baby number 2.

Shortlist is:

Edward

Alexander

Lance

We prefer traditional but not super common, it's currently impossible to agree.

Not Lance but the other 2 are nice.

Not sure how you're defining 'super common' but Edward and Alexander are both in the top 30 in England and Wales. Neither has left the top hundred since records started. Since they're popular in every age group, the popularity of the names is compounded by generations of popular use as there have always been thousands of Edwards and Alexanders born every year. Both would definitely be my definition of super common but you might have a different view.

Purplemagnolias · 22/12/2022 21:23

Lance - great strong underused classic

Alexander and Edward are very popular - I know at least 10 of each...

Purplemagnolias · 22/12/2022 21:24

If you don't want super common, definitely avoid Alexander and Edward

Jellyjam36 · 22/12/2022 21:41

I guess by super common I meant top 10.

Purplemagnolias · 22/12/2022 22:08

Lance is the most memorable and not too common/overused

Oneandabean · 22/12/2022 23:06

Edward and Alexander are both very common, not at all keen on Lance. Out of those I like Edward best

Mumofgirls2017 · 22/12/2022 23:29

Edward

Sabrina…honest opinions.

romdowa · 24/12/2022 22:22

I like lance. Haven't heard the name in a long long time.

Summer2424 · 24/12/2022 22:26

@Jellybean2023

Alexander is nice

FrogFairy · 24/12/2022 22:34

Lance is nice, not common but not silly/yooneek.
I also once met a lovely young man called Vance.

UsingChangeofName · 24/12/2022 22:50

I like Alexander best, but Edward is okay too.

Jellyjam36 · 24/12/2022 22:57

@FrogFairy yooneek 🤣 this keeps making me laugh.

Oh it's so hard to pick a name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/12/2022 01:08

I think Edward and Alexander are too popular for you, and Lance is going to be a bit abrupt and a bit odd.

I think longer names will work best, maybe:

Alistair
Zachary
Tobias nn Toby
Nathaniel
Jonathan
Nicholas nn Nico
Nathaniel
Gabriel
Lucian
Gideon

A lovely young man called Vance sounds like the first line in a limerick..
