Too similar?

We are expecting a baby girl in early 2023 and love the name Juliet. We already have an Elliott.

My conundrum is, are they too similar? Or am I overthinking this?!

Yes imo

Julia? Julianne? Juliana

SkylightSkylight · 22/12/2022 10:26

Yes, sorry.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/12/2022 10:26

Yes. You'll have to think again.

Kirili · 22/12/2022 11:58

Ah bugger I was hoping you'd all tell me I was overthinking it. Back to the drawing board! We have a second favourite which is nothing like Elliott so looks like we'll be going with that.

Thank you!

Yes but then again I know someone with a baby Elliot who already has s Charlotte.

purpleme12 · 22/12/2022 12:12

Well people say the other name I'd name my second child is too similar but I'd still go with it! So I say go with it!

NotRainingToday · 22/12/2022 12:14

I know a family that has Juliette, Emma and Elliott. I always thought they were very similar, but it works for them.

Blahburst · 22/12/2022 12:15

I think they are fine together. They don’t rhyme and the stress is on different parts of the two names. I’d go with Juliet.

Notonyournellykelly · 22/12/2022 12:17

I think they're fine together. Maybe a bit similar but it isn't weirdly similar. I heard of brothers called Elliott and Elias once. That was a bit much

TenThousandSpoons · 22/12/2022 12:21

Ju-lee-ET
ELL-ee-ut
Quite different stresses and don’t rhyme.

showmethegin · 22/12/2022 12:23

What about Ellis?

showmethegin · 22/12/2022 12:23

I sorry I misread the op that you had a Juliette already and are pregnant with a boy; ignore.

KirstenBlest · 22/12/2022 12:49

Ju-lee-ET - I detest this pronunciation

JOOL-i-et is nice
Elliott and Juliet are fine together

Kirili · 22/12/2022 12:54

Thank you so much everyone, this is so helpful to hear the range of views. I don't feel able to ask friends/family as I feel odd discussing potential names with them.

It sounds like the general consensus is that yes, they are quite similar, some people will think they're too similar, but mostly they are different enough that it won't be the butt of a joke or thought of much by others.

This was my thinking - the shortenings would be different so that helps with differentiating them. My DH wanted to go with Elodie and I've vetoed that for being basically the same name. I promise we are capable of variety, we just seem to be attracted to a particular sound!

i wouldn’t think much of it. I certainly wouldn’t give up Juliet as a name over it. It is lovely!

stewielouie · 22/12/2022 13:01

Imagine reading a Christmas card on with all your families names and see how that feels for you.

I think they’re too similar but you have to go with your gut!

Marcipex · 22/12/2022 13:11

I think it’s okay. Juliet is a lovely name.
I do like Elodie too, but it may disappear into the welter of Ellies and Ellas.

This is a really useful test. It does feel a bit similar in this context tbh!

I love Elodie
I chose a name I love for my child starting with El but she likes her friends to call her Ellie ☹️
I don't like it I love the name we chose cos it's beautiful and fairly rare without being out there. But there are so many Ellies.

purpledalmation · 22/12/2022 14:26

We have an Elliot and an Alexander. We call them Al and El. Who gives a shit. Choose a nice nice you love. You'll be saying 'the kids' anyway or shortening one of them.

Kindlethefourth · 22/12/2022 14:30

It's fine. Seriously. Don't overthink it. You will regret it if you use a name you like less

Crazyfaisy · 23/12/2022 21:52

How about Julia/Julie instead? Or Juliana?

Krakenwakes · 23/12/2022 21:56

I think Juliet is fine.
The stress is on the JOOL, not on the -et.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/12/2022 00:58

Juliet and Elodie are both too similar to Elliot. It’s weirdly twinny in both cases.

I assume you don’t like Julia?

Imogen
Adela
Jessamy
Jocelyn
Justina (Just-tee-nuh)
Ianthe
Ismene (IZ-me-nee)
Meredith
Marianne

might be others

Or Estella, Emmeline, Emerald, Esther, Edith, Emma or Emily if you like the double E
