Samara or Summer?

CityBlue37 · 21/12/2022 08:05

Any views on the two names above for our first baby due in 12 weeks?
For a second name my partner's family would like Sarita as it includes my name Sarah and his mothers name Rita. My favourite name is Samara but Samara Sarita doesn't really roll off the tongue whereas Summer Sarita does (altho I'm not mad on the name Sarita tbh.
Any views?

I love Samara. Can you stick in another middle name?

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 08:07

Go for your favourite first name. It is what you will be saying most the time so if you love a name choose that. I nearly chose something else for my little one but as soon as I saw them I knew it had to be my favourite name.

Blahburst · 21/12/2022 08:07

Samara and Sarita are both pretty but together it’s a bit much. Samara Rita?

Iamthewombat · 21/12/2022 08:10

Samara is the name of the evil undead child demon in The Ring.

It's also the name of many people who are not this

FlamingJingleBells · 21/12/2022 08:44

The initials will be a double SS, is this the affect you're going for?

Do you have Indian heritage as Sarita is a Hindu name?

Eixample · 21/12/2022 08:46

Samara Rita.
Samara “includes” Sarah to the same extent that Sarita does

Thanks @Ocrumbs - that comment really put me off when I first read it but you're right there's plenty of people who have the name that are not this.

Wouldn't let this put you off. I know two Annabelles.

PriamFarrl · 21/12/2022 08:57

Why are your partner’s family getting to dictate the middle name?

Consufed · 21/12/2022 09:03

Summer Smile

Definitely. It's not so an unusual a name that it is forever only to be associated with that character.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 21/12/2022 09:11

I think Samara Rita is the best combination too.

gothmothtime · 21/12/2022 09:13

I like Samara, but that's because I love horror films.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2022 09:13

I far prefer Samara. I don't think Summer flows any better with Sarita as the middle name at all.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2022 09:14

I think Samara Sarita flows better than Samara Rita - I find the "...mara ri..." bit sounds awkward.

custardbear · 21/12/2022 09:15

Samara is lovely. Sarita is ok, Summer is not great for a winter baby.
Can you use samara and sarita with a name in-between?
Samara Lydia Sarita Jones (or whatever the surname would be)

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2022 12:06

Definitely Samara.

Jinglecrunch · 21/12/2022 12:19

I like Summer
I really like Samara
I love Sarita, but as the first name

Jinglecrunch · 21/12/2022 12:20

I think Samara Sarita sounds fabulous, it's 'a bit much' but I think a bit much is sometimes the best way and it's the nicest sounding coupling of any of the names

ThatshallotBaby · 21/12/2022 12:23

Samara is gorgeous. It reminds me of Samsara, no negative connotations for me at all.
I think Samara Sarita is fabulous.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 21/12/2022 12:37

Use what you (and your partner) love. It's fine for someone else to suggest Sarita, it's a nice idea, but you're not obligated to use it - and definitely don't change to a compromise first name just to accommodate a middle you didn't pick and are not crazy about!

Personally, I really like Samara. Summer is just OK to me. Sarita can also be a Spanish-language name, usually as a pet name/diminutive of Sara rather than as a given name (or a use of Rita). If the real issue is that your partner's family want the name Rita included, focus on that rather than specifically including Sarita if you don't like it. But Samara Sarita (or Samara xxxxx Sarita) could be fine if you decide you really want both names.

winonarose · 23/12/2022 21:56

Love the sound of Samara and NN Sammy

Yes this.

Summer is a bit dopey anyway, but especially for a winter baby. (I’d far rather share a name with the undead than ne expected to be little miss sunshine.)

Anewhoo · 24/12/2022 01:03

Samara, I love horror films and this is a classic. I actually like Sarita as a first name, I know two and they’re both lovely people.
