How do you say Camille (UK)

Emz555 · 19/12/2022 20:27

I'd love to use it for my second daughter, but the pronunciation is what's giving me second thoughts.

I know that the correct French pronunciation is Ka-me, but if you're not French and live in the UK can you adopt that do you think?

Then there's the Ka-mil vs ka-meel debate, it just doesn't seem an easy name choice but I still love it!

Ka-meel. Emphasis on second part
I'm in Scotland

Twoshoesnewshoes · 20/12/2022 09:38

Ka MEEYL

TallulahBetty · 20/12/2022 09:41

I know a little Ka-MEEL. Lovely name

Notonyournellykelly · 20/12/2022 09:43

It gets pronounced ka-meel where I am (I work in a secondary school and we have one).

I don't think she will get the French pronunciation at an English school even if she gets it at home.

I know a little johaan whose parents pronounce it yo-hahn but he still gets jo-han at school. Ditto Heloise (hell-louise at school), Amelie (amerly), Elodie (Ellerdy)

If you want a name which won't get destroyed, I think you're better going for a name which works in both cultures like Emma or Charlotte.

That's my middle name! I've never heard anyone have it before! We've always said Cam-eel

inappropriateraspberry · 20/12/2022 09:50

Like Camilla with the final ah sound. Ka-mil

BiscuitLover3678 · 20/12/2022 09:52

I would say Cah-me (like Emily in Paris 😂)

but previously probably kam-il

what do you prefer? Does it matter?

Thelondonone · 20/12/2022 10:00

ca-meel, though the only person I know called this is french…

SilentNightDancer · 20/12/2022 10:03

Ca-MEAL.

Lulu1919 · 20/12/2022 10:13

Cameal

cormorant5 · 20/12/2022 10:21

I have known two Christian Egyptian men.
Their friends seemed to pronounce it with 'double e' sound

Fivebeanchilli · 20/12/2022 10:22

Ka - MEEL

Starburst8 · 20/12/2022 10:28

I would pronounce it Ca-Meel. There was a Camille in the tv show The Originals who also went by the name Cammie (or Cami, however it's chosen to be spelt).
It's a pretty name either way.

SweetSakura · 20/12/2022 10:31

Ka-me.

But I speak French.

KirstenBlest · 20/12/2022 10:33

Friend's DD's name. They say it as Kam-EEL

ErinAoife · 20/12/2022 10:35

French don't pronounce Camille Ka me but Ka Meel. My nephew is French and called Camille, in France it is both for boy or girl name

RaRaRaspoutine · 20/12/2022 11:05

I know a Kamille (who pronounces it the french way) - she goes by Kammy to get nearer the pronunciation. Otherwise I would say it like Ka-MEEL/Ca-MEEL like most UK posters here.

CornishGem1975 · 20/12/2022 11:08

Ka-meal

EarthlyNightshade · 20/12/2022 11:09

I'd say Ka-me if I saw it written down (like here), but if I was introduced to Ca-meel I'd be quite happy to use that.
It's very pretty, I also surprisingly like "Cam" for short.

timetogetlost · 21/12/2022 15:43

Ka me y

winonarose · 21/12/2022 17:42

Ka-mill

fairycupcakes · 21/12/2022 17:57

Ka mill - really pretty.

I think ka meal is an awful way to pronounce it.

Camilla is pronounced Ka mill ah not Ka meal ah so why should Camille be any different 🤷🏼‍♀️

Xenia · 21/12/2022 17:58

Ca meel - emphasis on second syllable

IncompleteSenten · 21/12/2022 18:01

Cam like camera and eel as in the fish

HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce · 21/12/2022 18:01

Off topic, but do people really pronounce ‘milk’ like ‘meelk’….?
