Mirren isn't that common at all, only 34 last year

I think it was Murren in braveheart, which I think means sorrow or spomething like that.

saltire · 02/02/2008 18:02

I used to work with a Rowan, and she always pronounced it Row (sow)an and yet I had an English friend who ahd a daughter called Rowana dn she pronounced it Ro(as in row your boat)an
I think the former is the Scots way of saying it

Wallace · 02/02/2008 18:02

That's funny Pruners, I was at school with a Roslynn too.

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 18:03

DH pronounces it to rhyme with sow, too, Pruni.

Our neighbour is a Mairhead and she says it 'My-rett'.

pointydog · 02/02/2008 18:04

Rowan (rhymes with sew) is more of a boy's name in england.

Rowan (rhymes with cow) more of a girl's anme in Scot;land

I love it for a girl

pointydog · 02/02/2008 18:06

yes scotland always Row Cow.

Like how we say David Bowie (cow) not Bowie (Sew)

SugarSkyHigh · 02/02/2008 18:06

i knew a Tyree, which is apparently a scottish island (not sure if that's how it is spelt tho)

pointydog · 02/02/2008 18:06

Tiree

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 18:07

How about Kirstie/Kirsty or Gillian?

My girls have Gaelic names, but we're also bringing them up in Scotland where they don't run into any problems with pronounciation.

If you're in England, however, or N. America or the like, consider carefully.

tassisssss · 02/02/2008 18:07

I love Kirsty, Shona, Isla, Mairi and Eilidh

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 18:07

Tiree is an island in the Hebrides.

clutteredup · 02/02/2008 18:10

SugarSkyHigh · 02/02/2008 18:11

is yoiur name Bonnie?

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 19:48

An Elspeth is actually an Elizabeth.

My MIL is an Elspeth, but on her birth certificate she is Elizabeth.

It doesn't come more Scottish than MIL, either.

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 19:49

I have a daughter who is very bonny, but that's not her name .

gigglewitch · 02/02/2008 19:50

Iona, Shona, Cora (core-ah)are all names in our family, all scottish

expatinscotland · 02/02/2008 19:52

I worked for a Shelagh.

Wallace · 02/02/2008 19:55

Pruners - ggs? I started there in 90. I think the Roslynn I'm thinking of might not have been still there when I started but think I might have known her from around

geordiemacminx · 02/02/2008 19:55

My name is on here about 7 or 8 times
