I always thought it was EVE-LYN, but understand it's also pronounced EV-A-LYN? Trying to work out if one is more common than the other in the UK? Are there regional variations?

EV-uh-lin is the usual female pronunciation, EEV-lin the (far more unusual) male — see for instance Evelyn Waugh the (male) novelist who married a woman called Evelyn.

SoupDragon · 15/12/2022 08:05

As a default, 3 syllables but I have heard it with 2 and would use that if told.

Mistakes in pronunciation will happen often throughout her life, although that can happen with many names.

It's my middle name from a long list of female ancestors & always been pronounced Eve-lyn. We are from Southern England.

ReluctantLondoners · 15/12/2022 09:10

I also thought Eve-lyn was the male version (like E Waugh)

For girls I'd say Ev-a-lyn

Melisande90 · 15/12/2022 09:12

I know a few people called Evelyn and they all pronounce it Ev-leen. This is in Northern Ireland though.

Evil-lyn.

Pemba · 15/12/2022 09:15

It's not the case that the eev-lin pronunciation is just for males. My grandmother was eev-lin, Eve for short and actually

Perfect28 · 15/12/2022 09:17

As a teacher this is one of the most irritating names for this reason. There are loads of Evelyn's and it's hard to remember.
