I have a Sofia. She’s 18 now. She’s gentle, soft and curious and it really suits her personality.

KirstenBlest · 08/12/2022 13:48

Of the two, Sofia, but that's because i don't like Eva at all. Both names are a bit overused.
The Sophia spelling is nicer - I'm not sure if Sofia is Soff-ya, like the city, or So-phee-a.

PainAuChocoless · 08/12/2022 13:54

@KirstenBlest same pronunciation as Sophia but prefer the alternate spelling.

I love Eva, but both are incredibly popular. Especially with all the Evies and Evelyn’s that are also Evies.

dmb91 · 08/12/2022 14:36

Sofia

fairycupcakes · 08/12/2022 23:08

Sofia

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/12/2022 23:37

Both quite nice but really done to death. I think Sophia is probably less popular now? If so I’d go fit that

Billslills · 09/12/2022 05:03

Sofia. Popular but very pretty. Too many Ava’s, Eve’s, Evelyn’s etc around that I think Eva could be confusing.

midsomermurderess · 09/12/2022 06:19

Eva.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 07:38

Both are soo overused and have become dull imo. If I had to choose then Sophia

Rauha · 09/12/2022 07:42

Sofia

TheaBrandt · 09/12/2022 07:47

I would rethink sorry. Are you aware these names are both done to death? It’s like choosing between Sarah or Claire in the 70s.

When we registered dd1 for 6th form the teacher said “Evie “? When we said it wasn’t her name he said “worth a try I swear every other girl is called Evie”

Cleopatra67 · 09/12/2022 07:50

It’s so odd seeing Eva being dismissed as too popular. It’s my name but I’m 55 and growing up in the UK I never met another. It’s short and strong and less ubiquitous than Sofia.

TheaBrandt · 09/12/2022 07:56

At one point quite literally a third of the girls in dds class were named a variant of Eve. Not only boring but terribly confusing.

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2022 09:25

@Cleopatra67 , yes but you're 55. In recent years, Ava, Eva, Ewa, Eve, Evie, Evelyn, Ivy have all been popular.
I can only think of one Eva I know who is my age or older.

Sophia was hardly used 30 years ago, but last year Sophia was #12, Sofia #23, and Sophie #30.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 14:25

That makes it worse! A name that was almost unused suddenly becomes super fashionable.

It will inevitably fall out of favour soon and sound really dated.

I dont think Eva will ever sound dated, having said that I much prefer Sofia its stunning, i do prefer the Sophia spelling though

FettleOfKish · 09/12/2022 18:00

Eva.

Granted I don't have kids in schools so they might be awash with them, but I've only ever met one Eva. She's in her late 30s and not British.

Ava's on the other hand, 10 a penny.

Rosie22xx · 09/12/2022 18:03

Sofia is adorable x

jamsandwich1 · 09/12/2022 18:05

I prefer Sofia. I love that spelling too, although only concern for me would be that she’ll spend her whole life saying Sofia with an F but is that really that big a deal?

mondaytosunday · 09/12/2022 18:07

I like them both but are very popular at the moment! I wanted to name my 17 year old Ava.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 22:09

That's what people said about Karen, Sharon or Sarah too....!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/12/2022 03:32

99% of names date to some degree. Big deal.

And there's a big difference between a name that arrives out of nowhere to become really popular (Karen) and an Old Testament name (Sarah) that dips in and out of popularity over the decades.

Of the two I much prefer Eva. I like its simplicity.

urbanbuddha · 10/12/2022 04:41

Eva
41st most popular girl’s name; Sofia is 23rd and Sophia 12th. Eva’s also prettier and stronger imo.

Go with Sofia . I love the name . This spelling is more uncommon . My daughters called Sophia . I was close to calling her Sophia Ava .

Eva is a lovely name - but how will it be pronounced - E vahh or Ayy Vahh ( My sister is called Eva and people always say it differently)
