I love Rue (pronounced the French way) but can't come up with any longer proper names this could work as a nn for.

Help?

Is this going to be possible to get people to say correctly, I wonder?

Very charming if enunciated properly, but a bit plain, on its own terms. Cute however - like Roo, in the Pooh Bear stories.

Prince Charles had a girlfriend called Kanga, didn't he? That's fun also.

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 14:35

I cannot believe that anyone could find Rue (French for street) a nice, even cute, name?

It sounds so harsh and awful, especially mispronounced by English speakers Confused

DuchessOfSausage · 05/12/2022 14:38

@Diverseopinions , easy if OP is in France or Belgium. She's not in the UK.
Kanga was her nickname, her real name is Dale.

Yes. I'd imagined that Kanga is a nickname. Attractive, especially for a person who has a fun personality.

RaRaRaspoutine · 05/12/2022 15:28

I know a Prudence and a Ruth who both go by Rue.

RaRaRaspoutine · 05/12/2022 15:29

Isn't there a Rue in Hunger Games too? The cute little girl Katniss helps? I like it as a name by itself too.

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 16:08

Do you actually mean Rue or do you mean Roo?

TheProblemIsMe · 05/12/2022 16:42

I'm a bilingual French/English speaker and I'm confused, maybe I'm misunderstanding how you think it's pronounced? Rue has some downmarket connotations in French, most of their better streets are Boulevards, Avenues or Champs.

If you took a French child to the mayor to declare their birth they would refuse to register the name "Rue".

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 18:14

I think that some people mispronounce Rue as Roo?!

Caspianberg · 05/12/2022 19:16

Rue and Roo sound exactly the same to me

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 19:39

But the op wants Rue to be pronounced the French way. That's what's causing the confusion!

What is the French way?

i’ve Googled pronunciation and there’s the French “R” which I think most non French speakers struggle with, and the “oo” is shorter depending on your accent.

for most English speakers the “oo” sound in Rue and Roo would be indistinguishable. If I were focussing I’d probably pronounce differently, but it would be a conscious effort.

Caspianberg · 05/12/2022 20:41

The French way sounds the same to me as well. The pronunciation of Roo and Rue sound the same in French to me, just with a French accent.

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 20:44

Rue in French sounds VERY different than Roo in English! The Rs are different and the ue is different to oo!

The French Rue sounds exactly like Rü in German (if that helps anyone).

Caspianberg · 05/12/2022 20:48

I speak German. Rü sound like Rue which also sounds like Roo to me.. they all sound the same. I know you mean the r rolls more, but that just accent not pronunciation difference

Isabeller · 05/12/2022 20:50

Ruby, Ruben, Roux, Ruen

Purplemagnolias · 05/12/2022 20:50

Rü sound like Rue

Yes

which also sounds like Roo to me

No they actually don't

Notanotherusername4321 · 05/12/2022 21:31

Thing is, many people simply won’t be able to distinguish between Roo and Rue, whatever the accent. And if they can, they may not be able to replicate that in their own speech.

my family are south Londoners, and most, absolutely genuinely, can’t hear that three and free are different words. I have tried sitting and going through the sounds and mouth movements, but they just can’t hear or replicate.

if you are lucky enough to be multi lingual or speak French as a first or additional language, or have a particular ear for nuance, you can probably hear it.

if the o/p is in France she may get her preferred pronunciation. If she is in the UK it will be “Roo” for the vast majority.

DemBonesDemBones · 05/12/2022 21:55

The French, German and English examples given all sound exactly the same to me! I have a little Ru and can't say it's been pronounced any differently by his French and German godparents to how I say it in English. Confused

Ruhannah - one that will only be recognised by Chalet School books fans.

My first thought was Ruey Richardson but I couldn't for the life of me remember what her full name was.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 05/12/2022 22:52

People can argue all they want about the differences in pronunciation between rue and roo but most people in the UK simply cannot hear a difference. If you're in the UK it will be Roo.
