Anna or Lana?

Baby is due in one week and feeling so indecisive about her name. We didn't have this problem when I had my son. I'm worried that if I hold off until she's born that she could go nameless for weeks.

Neither if the middle name starts with L, the surname starts with L, or you raise your daughter to change her name on marriage in which case she might end up with an L.

If no Ls involved, Anna.

but if I’m able to suggest a combination of both, how about Alaina?

SalviaOfficinalis · 04/12/2022 16:38

I really like Anna.
Also like pp suggestion of Lara, and also want to throw in Lorna.

TheaBrandt · 04/12/2022 16:42

Biased as we know a lovely teenage Lara. Not sure Lana is usable sadly.

TheaBrandt · 04/12/2022 16:43

Every Lorna I’ve ever met has been an absolute nutcase

maranella · 04/12/2022 16:45

Lana is awful - makes me think of llama.

Anna or Lara are both lovely, easy to pronounce, easy to spell - all good IMO!

Bananalanacake · 04/12/2022 17:05

I have a Lana, I love the name. DH wanted to name her after a Star Trek character B"E"Lanna but I suspected the registrar wouldn't let us get away with it.

Anna. Evergreen, unstated.
It's a solid classic and in the top 100 for most used girl names but lower down in the list.

What about Alannah? (With our without the H)

DramaAlpaca · 04/12/2022 17:59

Anna, definitely not Lana. Lara is a prettier alternative to Lana, as someone already said above.

StopFeckingFaffing · 04/12/2022 18:00

Anna is nice pronounced the British way but I would worry that Frozen has made the American pronunciation more well known and I'm really not keen on Arrr-nah

Lara is a better option IMHO

LaLuz7 · 04/12/2022 18:01

Anna by a mile.

Lana is a wet blanket of a name which also happens to mean wool in Spanish. Also anal backwards will get her bullied big time.

How about Lina or Lara or Vera or Dora or Mila or Lora or Tina?

WimpoleHat · 04/12/2022 18:01

Anna. Much more classic.

I laughed out loud to this. No idea why. 🤣

EdgeOfACoin · 04/12/2022 19:16

I like Alana - similar to Lana without the backwards spelling issue, and maybe slightly closer to Anna?

Pretty sure the ar na pronunciation is the Ana spelling!

fairycupcakes · 04/12/2022 21:34

@Beachy10 Anna 100% - beautiful and classic.

cannot unsee Lana backwards unfortunately and kids can be cruel!!

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/12/2022 23:39

Anna

Lana blurs a bit with all the Lara/Lena/Lyra/Luna/Leah/Leila/Lola/Lilas

But see what you think when she arrives, you’ve got some time.

Coconutcream123 · 05/12/2022 23:40

I like Anna a lot but prefer Lana to Anna

Nah

Have only ever heard An-nuh in the UK, and it’s quite popular right now. In the US it’s about 50% An-nuh, 50% Arn-nuh I’d say, so not universal there.

If you think Anna is too popular OP I think Annalise, Annis and Anest are all nice variations… Ines is also a form of Anna which is nice, as is Lois (drifting off the question here.)

CrappyUsername · 06/12/2022 00:05

Anna is boring

Lana is lovely, someone mentioned llama, but I think the nickname Lana llama is lovely.

The backwards spelling of Lana is an issue though. Kids are horrible.

Alana is lovely.

So is Lara.

Elena pronounced either Ell-ay-nah
or
ell-en-ah

Are nice too

Or what about Lani pronounced like Lana bit with an eeee sound on the end instead of ah
