Annabelle or Annabel? Does Annabell look misspelt to you?

hazeleyes94 · 29/11/2022 15:51

Is Annabell a nice spelling or does it look misspelt to you? We have Annabelle on our list but I'm leaning more towards Annabell now.

When I asked about Annabelle many people told me to use Annabel instead:

  • Which spelling do you prefer and why?
  • If you met someone named this, how would you spell it?
  • Do you pronounce them differently?
  • Which one is the original? Does anyone know?

Some comments on the spellings:

Annabell - is German and we have some heritage but the most important thing to me is that I sort of like the way it looks. Does it look misspelt to you or fine?

Annabelle - I really like it but I slightly emphasise the -belle part which I don't do for the other two. I like all pronunciations, though. Sometimes I worry about the doll or that it's too frilly.

Annabel - feels classic.

For some reason Annabell strikes the right balance for us. Annabelle is lovely but sometimes feels a bit much. Annabel is classic. Annabell feels classic but not frilly. She'll probably have to spell it anyway and I guess Annabell is easy to explain because you can say "two Ns and two Ls"?

For me, Annabelle is lovely and the spelling I'm most familiar with; Annabell does look misspelled (but I'm aware that is purely because I don't have any German friends/family, so I'm not used to that spelling!); and Annabel makes me think of Baby Bel.

NotEnoughMud · 29/11/2022 15:55

I've only ever know Annabels, do that spelling looks right to me. If you have German heritage and it's a grad forklift g though do what you like!

Yellowy · 29/11/2022 15:57

I like both Annabel and Annabelle, slight preference for the former in its simplicity. Annabell looks misspelled to me (as a Brit) and will be a PITA to spell out all the time.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/11/2022 16:01

Annabell looks wrong.
Annabelle is the popular spelling now, whereas it was the less frilly Annabel.
Bear in mind that she'll probably get called Anna or Annie.

bellaolive · 29/11/2022 16:04

I'm Annabel - sometimes people default to spelling my name as Annabelle, but I much prefer Annabel, less Disney Princess in my mind 😄

Sandysandwich · 29/11/2022 16:11

I like Annabel the most.
It sounds like one complete name rather than Annabelle which feels more two names styck together.

I have never seen Annabell

CatJumperTwat · 29/11/2022 16:15

I like Annabel.

Anabell looks like a typo.

Whataretheodds · 29/11/2022 16:42

Annabel is classic and IMO it's the best.
Annabell looks like a typo
Annabelle looks unnecessarily fussy.

Annabel is on our list as well and I'm just wondering: do you get called Anna, Anne or Annie?

Not a huge fan of either of those but I've met several Annabelles, Annabels in my life and none were ever called Anne, Anna or Annie. They were either Annabel, Annabelle or Belle.

caitlinrose · 29/11/2022 16:50

Annabel is on our list and I'd pick that.

Annabell doesn't really look misspelt to me but sort of uneven.

Annabelle is fine but if you like Annabel too I would avoid it as it is the exact spelling the horror films used for the doll.

PollyPeter · 29/11/2022 16:50

Annabell looks terrible to me. And my phone just auto corrected it to Annabel.
I know an Annabel in her 40s and an Annabelle who is around 10. I would say Annabel is the classic version.

soulinablackberrypie · 29/11/2022 18:44

I like Annabel. Annabelle sounds too frilly for me and the only Annabell I've ever heard of is the doll, Baby Annabell.

Yes, exactly this.

Basilthymerosemary · 29/11/2022 18:51

Annabel .Simple and less 'fluff' x

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/11/2022 20:49

Annabel - because while nice it is quite a frilly name so a simple spelling is a nice balanced. It’s the standard Uk spelling, although the French spelling is obviously popular.

Annabelle is too frilly for me

Annabell would be bonkers here. She will spend her entire life correcting people. She really will not thank you.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/11/2022 21:03

Annabel is the traditional spelling in the UK.

Annabell totally looks like a misspelling. If you're raising your daughter in the UK, please don't use this spelling.

Annabelle is too frilly for my tastes, but I think it's on the rise.

Lcb123 · 29/11/2022 21:07

Yes, Annabell does looks mis-spelt. Even typing it here, it autocorrected!

QueenOfThorns · 29/11/2022 21:08

Annabelle is currently the more popular version, but I hate frilly names and there is Dutch ancestry, so we went for Annabel.

As a young lady who knows her own mind, DD (8) is adamant that we’re not allowed to shorten it in any way Grin

Zib · 29/11/2022 21:18

Annabell says "uneducated parents"

And every time someone types her name they will fight their autocorrect,

Epicstorm · 29/11/2022 21:21

Annabel would be my choice. It’s the traditional spelling I think.

Pearfacebanana · 29/11/2022 21:32

I have an Annabel. It's the correct British (well actually Scottish) spelling. I find Annabelle too long.

Everyone will spell it wrong (you'll be amazed how many versions you get). Or call her Abigail. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Still the best name ever in my view!

AndAllOurYesterdays · 29/11/2022 21:40

I'm an Annabel. People spell it every which way. It's very annoying. Never been called Annie or Anna, it's always been shortened to Bel.

fairycupcakes · 29/11/2022 21:44

I know an adult Annabelle so this is probably how I’d spell it initially but I prefer Annabel - looks more classic, less frilly etc. Annabell looks misspelt to me.

Purplemagnolias · 29/11/2022 22:56

We have an Annabel and unfortunately everyone seems to mis-spell it.

Theoldwoman · 30/11/2022 07:29

I love Annabel

All those names with extra letters are too much for me.

Prefer Juliet to Juliette
Isabel to Isabelle
Scarlet to Scarlette
Rachel to Rachelle
Chantel to Chantelle
