What do you think of the name Mahpari, it means moon fairy? (Persian origin name for a Pakistani baby).
The Mah is like the “Za” in Zara with a soft H sound at the end and then Pari is like Perry but with an A.

I think it's really pretty :)

I'm not Persian or Pakistani so I don't know the cultural context of this name. But I do think it has a lovely sound and the meaning is enchanting.

Re: pronunciation: Would it almost rhyme with Zackary then op?

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 29/11/2022 11:03

"Zar-parry" like that?

fairycupcakes · 29/11/2022 11:06

Oh that’s really pretty and what a sweet meaning!

dottypencilcase · 29/11/2022 11:13

I'm a Punjabi speaker and I just don't think it translates very well I'm afraid. It sounds like a swear word. Mah= mother, Pari= torn. Would Mahnoor be an option- moonlight? Or even Pari on its own? Or a different name altogether that includes moon as in Mahgul?

Me neither but I love it, really pretty!

caitlinrose · 29/11/2022 16:53

The meaning is nice.

But it sounds a bit like someone is trying to speak French. Sorry!

It sounds like someone saying "mon Paris" with an accent.

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 17:53

Love it

VerveClique · 29/11/2022 17:56

It looks like an anagram of something else… I’d be trying to work it out! I think there are nicer names to choose from.

Scirocco · 29/11/2022 18:29

It's really pretty but the approximate translation in Punjabi would put me off, sorry!

babynameideas · 29/11/2022 19:09

Thank you for all the comments!

@SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 Yes quite similar :)

@dottypencilcase If you don’t mind sharing, what is the exact swear word in Punjabi? Is it literally Mahpari or does it sound similar to the name? Thanks for highlighting this!

@dottypencilcase I don’t speak Punjabi so I’ve never heard of anything like it which has a bad meaning!

I’m an urdu speaker. Mahpari is nice but to me I know lots of people who have pari as a nickname it doesn’t feel like a proper name. To me anyway.

What about:
Mahreen
Maheen
Mahroze
Mahvish
Mahnoor

villamariavintrapp · 29/11/2022 20:42

I think it's nice. Mahnoor wouldn't work well in an English speaking country. Manure is horse poo.

BigsyMalone · 29/11/2022 20:47

Nah. So hard to pronounce for Brits. Beautiful if pronounced properly though. Even "Pari" would be "Paa-ree" or to rhyme with hurry which is wrong. The p should be prounounced with more of a pursed lip, and tip of the tongue should be further back on the roof of the mouth than a usual rounded 'r'.

Gah, too hard to explain but basically NO!

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/11/2022 20:53

Very pretty

XanaduKira · 29/11/2022 20:58

I think it sounds like a beautiful name and would pronounce it however you told me to but I've no awareness of any cultural background with the name.
