I read this the other day and I'd just like to know how you pronounce it.

Do you like it? Any association with it?

It's not on our list and I don't think I will add it as it might cause lots of pr. errors and spelling problems. I sort of like it as a middle name but I'm not sure if the pr. I'm using is the one most people are likely to use.

So this is more of a general question and likely not a name we will pick. Still curious what you think.

E-lis-ee-ah I would guess. I guess you could pronounce it like Elisha.

I like Alicia which is A-lis-ee-ah.

LoveAutumnColours · 16/11/2022 14:16

Alicia is also A Lee sha (as per Alicia keys)

so similar with Elysia, you’re inviting many other pronunciations. Just be aware your child will forever be telling people how they want their name pronounced. She could be El is eea.

LoveAutumnColours · 16/11/2022 14:17

Sorry, posted too soon. Or she could be Ee Lee Sha

I can imagine some 1970s hippy giving their child the name Elysia after Elysian Fields etc.

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 16/11/2022 14:19

El-iz-ee-ah.

Classical Roman, roughly meaning paradise. As in the Elysian Fields, the Roman version of heaven, where heroes were sent by the gods.

Classical scholars will know how to pronounce it. You might get a variety of interpretations otherwise.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 16/11/2022 14:19

or a musician in a prog rock band.

fairycupcakes · 16/11/2022 14:20

GlassDeli · 16/11/2022 15:50

El-ee-zee-a

KirstenBlest · 16/11/2022 15:50

El-izz-ee-uh
It's better than Hades

CornishGem1975 · 16/11/2022 15:54

EL-EEE-SEE-YA

It's the name of my daughter's friend.

Sandysandwich · 16/11/2022 16:06

El ee see ah
Or maybe
El ee zha

KnickerlessParsons · 16/11/2022 16:17

As in Elysian Fields? Or Champs d'Elysés?

No.

radho · 16/11/2022 17:08

I would say eh-LIZ-ee-uh (no idea if that's "right" as I don't speak Latin - or is it Greek?) but I think you would get a lot of people pronouncing it like Alicia/Alisha.

Seems best as a middle name because of the pronunciation issues.

soulinablackberrypie · 16/11/2022 19:15

Our old neighbours had a granddaughter of that name - she was ill-EEZ-ee-a.

DubLynn · 16/11/2022 20:10

Eh-lis-ee-ah. I think it's lovely and really like the spelling

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/11/2022 02:09

This.

I’d go for Alicia which is better know. That’s what everyone will think she’s called anyway

AmandaMirandaPanda · 17/11/2022 02:35

I associate it with the EU Anthem: "daughters of Elysium", and on that basis I like it, but maybe not enough to use for a child. Or these days, maybe enough.

I'd pronounce it eh-LEE-see-uh.

Mirabai · 17/11/2022 18:05

I like Elissa which is another name for Dido queen of Carthage.

dream28 · 17/11/2022 18:13

It's from Greek myth, but I'm unsure are elysian fields before or after Romans... anyways...

Greek y originally was pronounced like German ü or French u... there was also some "guided rules" such as that pyro (fire in Greek) is peero because y came in front of r, but I don't know if this is true for modern Greek.

dream28 · 17/11/2022 18:15

I pronounce it ELL-eez -ia or el-UZ-ia similar to Louisa.

TheVanguardSix · 17/11/2022 18:19

It’s a bit too Elysian Fields for me. It’s got a heavenly/afterlife connotation.
It’s a beautiful name but I don’t know… personally it would not be a name I’d choose but if you love it, go for it.

DocMarteens · 17/11/2022 18:30

Arabic name pronounced Alyazia

CambsAlways · 17/11/2022 18:32

Love the name
