Help with girls name

Hi all,
husband and I can’t agree on a girls name and it’s really stressing me out! He either likes very very traditional/top ten names or names that are too far out there even for me. I like names that are unusual but not extreme. So I realise we are going to have to compromise. The one name we both really liked was Mallory until we looked up the meaning :(

So, I had liked Eva Rae but when said quick I’ll does it sound too much like ‘either way’
if so what other middle names go well with Eva but are a bit more unusual/not run of the mill?

Also I liked Marley, husband didn’t want Marl as a nickname, do you think people would shorter Marlo to Marl?

thanks 😊

I have never heard Marley being shortened to be honest. It's a lovely name. Also it wouldn't bother me about the meaning of the name if you really love Mallory.

What about
Marnie
Maria
Marina

Laurdo · 09/11/2022 12:51

My DSD is Ava Rae.

What about Melody instead of Mallory?

TalkisChips · 09/11/2022 12:52

Eva is lovely but soooo massively popular with Evie and Ava. So many girls have Rae as a middle name along with Rose/Grace/May so it depends how bothered you are about being the (potentially) 5th Eva Rae in her year.

I see what you mean about the meaning of Mallory, I wasn’t aware of that. Does Marley get shortened? It might at school.

SophiaLarsen · 09/11/2022 12:55

How about Marla?

Or yes to Melody or Melissa?

Eva is nice. How about Eva Marie, Eva Grace, Eva Kate.

Laurdo · 09/11/2022 12:57

I just had to google the meaning of Mallory (unlucky - to save anyone the trouble). If you like it I'd go with it and if you're bothered by name meanings Google also told me
"According to the research, the most popular lucky girls name is Iris which means “rainbow” in Greek."

So what about Mallory Iris to balance it out?

KitchenSupper · 09/11/2022 12:59

If people can call their kids Amelia and Claudia, you can definitely use Mallory (and plenty of other parents have). Don’t let a history that nobody else knows put you off a name you love.
Otherwise, Valerie?

I agree. How many time do you actually discuss the "meaning" of a name anyway.

Dreamingcats · 09/11/2022 13:00

I would use Mallory. It's lovely and most people don't care what a name means. Plenty of lovely common names don't have good meanings. Cecilia springs to mind.

I wouldn't worry about the flow of Eva Rae either. The middle name will rarely be said! I have never said my DC's since the birth announcement!

I wouldn't shorten Marley to Marlo. It's not shorter. How about Milo?

Dogmum11 · 09/11/2022 16:37

I really like Marnie but OH thinks it better suited for dogs 😞

Martha?

Dogmum11 · 09/11/2022 16:38

Good plan regarding the middle name!

Melanie?

Amelie?

Valerie?

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/11/2022 16:51

I don't think necessarily will shorten Marley to marl. Marlowe is nice too.

eva pearl
eva juliet
eva harriet
eva melody
eva penelope
eva grace
eva willow
eva margot
eva wren
eva rosalie
eva clementine
eva madeline
eva joy
eva charlotte
eva daisy

Foxtrot101 · 09/11/2022 18:52

I agree you can't have Eva Rae.
I think Eva Mallory works though and I doubt if the meaning of Mallory will ever cross anyone's mind.
Perhaps go through the names list data looking at the names lower down the list and pairing them with Eva to see if any jump out.
Fwiw I think Marley would get Marley 90 odd % of the time.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/11/2022 19:32

Eva Belle
Eva Alexis.
Eva Jasmine
Eva Jade
Eva Paige
Eva Pearl
Eva Willow
Eva Naomi.
Eva Louise (not as popular as a middle name now)
Eva Scarlett
Eva Celeste.
Eva Marie
Eva Mary

BernieBarks · 09/11/2022 20:07

Valentina ? Giovanna ? Martha ?

FredinBread · 10/11/2022 03:03

Mallory sounds like
Romilly
Elodie
Verity

There's a lot of Eva/Ava/Niamh/Lola etc round here if popularity putz you off. Feel like Mallory and Eva are really different

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 10/11/2022 03:13

One of my neighbours has named her baby girl Mallory, I love it . She is only a couple of weeks old & it really suits her . Don’t take any notice of the meaning. As pp said you could use the middle name Iris if it troubled you. Best wishes for your little ones birth 💐

mathanxiety · 10/11/2022 03:52

If you like Mallory, how about:
Bellamy
Melanie
Elowen
Ellery
Emery
Amber
Mella
Lorelei

sopeas · 10/11/2022 10:16

I absolutely loved Mallory too until I looked up the meaning a few years back 😢 some will tell you to ignore the meanings of names but if you’re like me and into the meanings behind the names it’s difficult to just ignore!

Eva is lovely but it is very popular now. If this doesn’t bother you or DH then these would be my suggestions 🥰

Eva Claire
Eva Lily
Eva Poppy
Eva Ann/Ann
Eva Sophia
Eva Wren
Eva Harriet
Eva Saffron
Eva Melody
Eva Harmony
Eva Morgan
Eva Chloé
Eva Nicole
Eva Kate
Eva Catherine
Eva Jasmine
Eva Marie
Eva Eleanor
Eva Willow
Eva Alexis
Eva Charlotte
