I like the name Stanley, but my surname is Smith.

Is Stan Smith a no-go?

Well it’s the name of the popular Adidas trainers. I have some.

toastofthetown · 07/11/2022 21:46

I wouldn't do it. It's not a terrible association but it's one I think most people would make and it could be tiresome at best.

RhubarbFairy · 07/11/2022 21:47

I know several Stanley's, all under the age of 10. None tend to go by Stan though.

Stan Smith is fine, though people may think of the singer Sam Smith. Stanley Smith is better. Can't really go wrong with Smith as a surname.

MichaelFabricantWig · 07/11/2022 21:47

Stanley is sweet

sopeas · 07/11/2022 21:54

Stan Smith are trainers. Not the worst association though. Love the name Stanley, I’d say go for it :)

Undertheoldlindentree · 07/11/2022 21:58

To me Stanley sounds very dull and stodgy when put together with Smith. Both ok in their own right, but I'd look for a different combo. Sorry, just my view.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/11/2022 21:59

Stan Smith sounds pretty cool to me.

Gummibär · 07/11/2022 22:09

No I wouldn't. The Stan Smith trainers are too well known.

givemelove · 07/11/2022 22:17

Yes, I realise the trainer connotation - that's what I meant by it being a no-go!

One to mull over I think

I would try and find something else. Who wants to have the same name as trainers.

Sydney?

Gummibär · 07/11/2022 22:27

With such a popular surname I would choose a more unusual first name.

givemelove · 07/11/2022 22:35

Yes, agree that with such a common surname I'd like an unusual first name. Sorted on a girl name but really struggling with boys!

Stan Smith is the title character in American Dad. He's a buffoonish CIA agent.

Perhaps some more unusual names for you to consider then @givemelove?

Fletcher

Stanley is my favourite name but I wouldn’t use it with Smith. My other favourite boys names are Joseph and Jim. Either of those any good?

hallowedweens · 08/11/2022 13:53

Definitely not

Gummibär · 08/11/2022 17:08

How about these less common names to go with Smith

Christopher
Quentin
Reuben
Caspar

Gummibär · 08/11/2022 17:09

Actually probably not Christopher as he might end up as Chris Smith Blush

Dillydollydingdong · 08/11/2022 17:11

Stan makes me think of man with a pipe, turnups and a knotted hankie on his head 😂
