Hi all.

Please help....due first baby April 23 and would like to start thinking about names.

I don't know the sex yet.

My problem is the names I really like I can't really use for various reasons. Hoping by looking at the name list, people can suggest some similar.

The last name will be Fisher.

Girls

  1. Isla Fisher - love this name but she is a known actress
  2. Olivia Fisher - Can't use as a close member of family
  3. Francesca Fisher - Same as above
  4. Sofia Fisher - Feel this might be too over used
  5. Emmie Fisher - Too similar to my name (Emma)

Boys

  1. Alfie Fisher - Family Dog name
  2. Albie Fisher - Another baby in the family
  3. Bobby Fisher - Another Family dog name 🙃

I seem to like a's and e's sounding names from the above

Thanks x

Our surname is very similar to yours (it means 'fish' in old English and some Scandi languages). We've had to choose names with hard consonants to mitigate the soft F and S sounds.

Our son is Gilbert but we also had on our list:

Edmond
Harold
Jory
Jago
Malcolm

Marion
Mariella
Hero
Eleni
Eleri
Cordelia
Claudia
Juno

I’d recommend staying away from the top 100 names (even 200), as you can hear them all around. If you have kids in school you know. There is even 2 of each, in my DD’s there are 2 Eva’s and 2 Chloe’s for ex. Called little Eva and big Eva until teachers told them to use their full names instead, like Eva Johnson (made up) instead of Eva J, a mouthful.

some if not most of the names on your list are overused.

better to have a name that you don’t fancy as much as the uk top 1 (Olivia I think), then be one of the 2 or 3 Olivia’s in a class. It will grow with your child.

I have a popular name (for my time) and it hasn’t been a class or group where there wasn’t another girl with my name… I’d rather had an obscure name. Never mind my parents also have a me another popular name as middle name…
