Which way round?

I can’t work out if I prefer Aisling Joy or Joy Aisling. Our surname is two syllables. Any ideas?

I would go with Joy Aisling. It is hard to decide because both ways flow.

I prefer Aisling Joy (which I appreciate doesn't help with dream28's answer!)

I LOVE Joy as a first name. But also love Aisling……

Would you run the risk of using one and saving the other in case you have another girl??

I tend towards Aisling Joy, I think. We can’t save either name for another but she truly is our Joy and I’m aware you don’t really use your middle name much. It’s so hard choosing names isn’t it!

Which name do you want to call your child? Put that first.

Aisling Joy, though tbh I'd go with whatever name you like most as unless it's a hyphened name they will only be known by their first name.

My girl is Firstname Joy, and a big part of why we didn't use Joy for her first name is that it's a lot to live up to. Like all virtue names, what happens when she has a teenage grumpy phase, or even just a bad day? At best she'd be teased, at worst feel she'd let us down with our expectations.

Like you, she really is the joy of our lives. Congratulations

One of my other daughters has Hope as a middle name, so it would work quite nicely to have Joy middle too.

Both very lovely names! I would lean towards Aisling Joy especially if your other dd has Hope as a middle name I do think that’s quite sweet that they’d both had pretty one syllable middle names 😊

I think Aisling Joy flows better. Joy Aisling, said quickly sounds a bit like Joyous.... rather than Joy Ais... Which puts me off a bit.

Aisling Joy, because Aisling is the nicer name and nobody ever uses middle names except on the occasional form. It’s more important for the first name to be your favourite than worry about flow.

Which flows better with the surname? She'll be Joy Biscuit or Aisling Biscuit more often than the full name.

Being called Joy is A LOT of pressure - and the only one I knew was a misery guts, a solid woman, but joy was not in her make-up. As a middle name it’s fine.
